“I know. Can I watch?”

“Something like this will probably take more than fourteen or fifteen hours,” I said.

“So. I can watch from the operating suite. Please, Uncle Jackson. Please. Please.”

“We’ll see.” I kissed the side of her head and set her down.

“Okay. I’m going home to tell my dad!” She ran out of my office.

CHAPTER25

Georgia

“Time of death, twenty-one forty-five.” I ripped off my bloody gloves and threw them down.

Before leaving the O.R., I removed my gown and mask and inhaled a deep breath as I walked to the surgical waiting room.

“Dr. Scott,” Mr. Atkins jumped up from his seat.

“Your son is fine, and he’s in the NICU for observation.”

“And Jaimie?”

“We did everything we could to save her, but she suffered a lot of blood loss.” Tears filled my eyes. “Her internal injuries were too severe. I’m so sorry.”

“I told her to stay home. Why didn’t she listen?” Tears streamed down his face. “Why didn’t she listen to me?” He gripped his head and began to sob.

After speaking with him for a while, I took him to the NICU to be with his newborn son. When I climbed into my car, I pulled my phone from my purse and sent Jackson a text message.

“I lost my patient tonight. I’m on my way home now.”

“I’m so sorry, babe. Take a deep breath and drive safely. We’ll talk when you get home.”

When I pulled into the driveway, I saw Jackson sitting on the porch steps. He got up, walked over, and opened my car door.

“Come here.” He held out his hand.

He helped me out of the car and pulled me into an embrace. I let everything out that I’d been holding in since it happened.

“I know, babe.” He hugged me tight. “It’s the worst feeling in the world.”

“Hey, you two. Is everything okay?” Conner asked.

“Georgia lost a patient tonight.”

“Aw, Georgia. I’m sorry. It’s the worst part of what we do. Just know we’re here for you. I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Conner.” I wiped my eyes.

“Come on. Let’s go inside and get ready for bed.” Jackson held me close as we walked into the house and up the stairs to the bedroom. “What happened?”

“She was in a car accident.” I stripped out of my clothes and grabbed my nightshirt from the drawer.

“And the baby?” he asked.

“He’s fine. They’re keeping him in the NICU for observation. How did it go with Jamieson?” I climbed into bed.

“We think we can remove the tumor. He agreed to help me with the surgery.”
