A few of my neighbors cast interested, and longing glances in his direction.

He stood up straighter when he saw me and sprung into action. “I thought you could use a ride.”

“I was going to get a cab or something.”

Killian waved my comment away and took the suitcases. “I have a driver waiting for us outside.”

In silence, I followed him outside and saw the car parked by the curb. A uniformed driver stepped forward, took my bags out of Killian’s hands and put them in the trunk. I offered him a small smile as he held the door open for Skittles and I. In the car, I set Skittles down between us and peered into the crate, where he sat, blinking up at me with his big buggy eyes.

If Skittles could talk, I was sure he’d keep my secrets.

Killian got into the car, pulled the door shut behind him. “I wanted to make sure you didn’t need anything before you left.”

“I’ve got everything under control,” I told him, with a lift of my chin. “And if I need anything, I’ll be in touch.”

Killian nodded and didn’t look at me. “You’ve got a good team there, Meg.”

“I know.”

Silence stretched between us.

I turned away from him and pressed my face to the window. “I’m going to miss New York. I never thought I would leave to be honest.”

Killian grunted and didn’t say anything.

Reluctantly, I tilted my head in his direction, but he was scrolling through his phone, a look of fierce concentration etched onto his face. A strange energy settled between us, and I had no idea what to make of it. All I knew is that the longer I sat there, waiting for New York city traffic to ease up, the more reluctant I was to tell Killian about the pregnancy.

Even if the child was half his.

By the time we pulled up outside the airport, I had all but decided I wasn’t going to tell him about the baby. Instead, I let him and his driver help me find a luggage cart for my suitcases. After loading them up and placing Skittles on the top, I tilted my head back to look at Killian. He put his phone away and shoved both hands into the pocket of his coat.

People jostled past us in either direction.

Killian opened his mouth, and a swell of emotion rose in my chest. “Well, have a safe flight, Meg. See you around.”

A heavy feeling settled in the center of my stomach. “Right, thanks. I’ll be seeing you…Killian.”

A heartbeat later, I spun on my heels and pushed my way through the double doors, without a backwards glance. In two hours, I was going to be on a plane headed to Miami, and by the time I landed my test results were going to be out.

Regardless of whether or not I decided to keep the baby, Killian wasn’t going to know about it.

It was time for me to put Killian Holt behind me once and for all.

KILLIAN

“Harvey, can you come in here?”

A moment later, my assistant, Harvey materialized in the doorway with a tablet held in his hand. He pushed his glasses up his nose and at my signal stepped in, an expectant look on his face.

“I need you to push back the meeting with La Rouge till tomorrow,” I began, twisting to face him in my chair. “And I need you to schedule a meeting with the board for later this week.”

Harvey nodded, his fingers moving steadily over the tablet. “Is there a particular date that you had in mind, Mr. Holt?”

I shook my head. “No but make sure it’s earlier in the morning if you can.”

“Understood, sir.”
