Mr. Russo’s expression hardened. “You really don’t want to make an enemy out of Mr. McIntyre.”

I cast a quick glance at Ashley and gave her a small imperceptible look. She was still on the phone, and I saw her gesturing wildly. Then I swung my gaze back to Mr. Russo and straightened my back, leaving a few inches of space between us.

“I really don’t give a shit, Mr. Russo. Either you tell me why you’re really here, or you can get out of my office.”

Do not back down. If he calls your bluff or senses your uncertainty, you might as well pack up and leave right away.

Mr. Russo paused. “Mr. McIntyre doesn’t like it when people move in on his property.”

“It’s a good thing it’s not his property then, is it?”

A vein bulged in Mr. Russo’s temple, and he flexed his jaw.

I wondered if I had pushed him too far. Then I folded my arms over my chest and tilted my head in the direction of the wall, where a baseball bat was propped up. “I don’t like threats, Mr. Russo, and I’m not afraid of you.”

I don’t know what the fuck I thought I was going to do with the bat, but it was a sort of comforting thought.

In spite of every instinct in my body telling me to run.

I wouldn’t.

I steadied myself again.

McIntyre wasn’t going to risk having the FBI breathing down his neck by drawing attention to himself in such a public manner. Taking out his enemies discreetly and in the shadows was one thing. Coming after me when Mr. Russo had been seen by several people was another, and I doubted McIntyre wanted the police circling back to him if things went sideways.

Or at all.

It was the only reason McIntyre had avoided being caught all of this time. As far as I could tell, he was the kind of businessman who put on a good show and got other people to do his dirty work for him.

Coward.

“I strongly suggest you get the fuck out of my office, Mr. Russo. I have work to finish.”

“You’ve been warned.”

He stared at me for a few seconds more before he spun on his heels and left. On his way out the door, he pulled on the door with a thud. Through the glass doors, I watched him rummage through his pocket and pull something out of his pocket. I held my breath and tensed until I realized it was his phone. Russo pressed it to his ear and stalked off, his expression one of cold fury. As soon as he rounded the corner and disappeared, my knees went weak, and I leaned back against the desk.

Ashely stumbled in, her face as white as a sheet. “What are we going to do?”

“Well first of all, we’re going to find out where the fuck security was during all of this. And give them strict instructions not to let him in. Send out an email warning everyone about him.”

Ashley swallowed. “The police should be here soon.”

I pushed myself off the desk and cleared my throat. “We’ll give them our statements and then take the rest of the day off.”

Ashley stared at me. “Is that a good idea?”

“I have a feeling we’re both going to need it.”

During the walk back to the apartment complex the company had rented out, I took several detours and kept glancing over my shoulders. Once I was safely inside the room, I bolted the door shut and squinted through the peephole. Skittles came out to greet me, purring and rubbing himself against my desk. With trembling hands, I picked him up and went over to the bed.

After leaving a lengthy message to Serena, blowing off steam, I set the phone down on my bed and stared at it. For a while, I debated whether or not to call Killian until I eventually decided against it.

There was nothing he could do anyway.

I was going to have to take care of this on my own.

We’d up security, and I’d be careful moving forward.
