Killian folded his arms over his chest and gave him a bored look. “Make sure you get my message to Mr. McIntyre, it’s very important.”

Mr. Russo spun on his heels, got back into his car and drove away.

I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as he did. “I’m pretty sure we pissed them off even more.”

“I’ve never liked bullies, Meg. If McIntyre wants a fight, he’s got one.”

MEGHAN

“You should slow down.”

Killian shot me a quick look before swinging his gaze back to the road. “No one likes a backseat driver, Meg. We’ll be fine.”

I balled my hands into fists at my side and said nothing.

A few minutes ago we got into Killian’s car, and as soon as my door clicked shut behind me, he peeled away from the parking lot. Since then, he had kept both hands on the wheel, in a vice-like grip, and a look of calculated fury on his face. Half of me wanted to reach out and smooth out the look on his face, but the other half of me knew better.

I wasn’t the one who was going to make this better.

Killian wanted to make sure McIntyre had gotten the message louder and clearer.

And I was fairly certain that if I hadn’t been there, he would’ve taken on Russo.

When the car skidded to a halt outside the smaller branch, a few blocks away from the apartment complex, I pushed my door open. Then I wheeled around to face Killian, but he wouldn’t look at me. Instead, he made a beeline for the office, each move filled with deadly purpose and precision.

I almost pitied McIntyre and his associates.

I took off after Killian, who was taking such long strides, I had to speed walk to keep up. Once he reached the doors, he pushed them open and waited for me. I hurried in after him, and he let the door fall shut. With everyone else at the construction site, it was only the two uniformed security guards and Ashley in the building. Killian motioned to them and led them down the hall and into my office.

I cast Ashley a quick look on my way back. “Why don’t you take off for the day? Have a nice night, Ashley.”

Ashley stood up and tilted her head to the side. “Are you sure you don’t need me to stay, Ms. Gomez?”

“Yes, I’m sure. Thank you.”

Moments later, the security guards came out of my office with their heads lowered. I brushed past them, stepped into my office and pulled the doors shut behind me.

It was a good thing no one else was around for Killian to take his anger out on.

“What the hell did you do?”

“I told them how to do their jobs.”

I frowned. “It’s not their fault he showed up at the construction site.”

Killian wheeled around to face me, and a muscle ticked in his jaw. “They need to learn how to do their goddamn jobs properly. You can’t stay here, Meg. You need to come back to New York with me.”

“You need to calm down.”

“You should be taking this more seriously, Meghan. McIntyre means business and this was not an empty threat. That’s strike two.” He rubbed his temples. “Fuck. I should have never sent you to Miami. Fucking McIntyre needs to be taught a lesson.”

I covered the distance between us and shook my head. “This is exactly what he wants to do. He wants to get a rise out of you. I don’t need saving, Killian. I’ll be fine.”

Killian’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not going to sit around and take this. Or put you in harm's way.”

“We need to be smart. We don’t want him as our enemy, and we don’t want to be in the crosshairs.”
