For good.

Eventually, I straightened my back and cleared my throat. “What’s going on?”

“You didn’t have to get dressed up for me, Meg.”

I brushed popcorn kernels off of my collar and stood up straighter. “What are you doing here, Killian?”

“Visiting my favorite employee.”

I folded my arms over my chest and raised an eyebrow. “Carl is on the floor above.”

Killian shrugged. “You can see why I’d make that mistake then. Aren’t you going to invite me in? It’s rude to leave your guests at the door.”

I hesitated before pushing the door open. “It’s ruder to show up unannounced.”

Raymond’s expression turned amused as his gaze moved between the two of us. Wordlessly, he spun on his heels and gave his back to us, allowing us a moment of privacy. I stared at his back before swinging my gaze back to Killian. He flashed me another smile and brushed past Raymond.

Killian stepped in, and I slammed the door shut behind him. “I wouldn’t have had to show up unannounced if you had answered my calls.”

“I would have answered your calls if I thought you had anything useful to say.”

Killian wheeled around to face me, his blue eyes swimming with amusement. “I always have something useful to say, Meg. Just because you don’t want to admit it doesn’t make it true.”

“Just because you think it’s true doesn’t mean it is.”

Killian’s smirk grew. “You make a good point.”

Silence stretched between us.

Skittles rubbed himself against Killian’s leg and purred. “I knew he would warm up to me sooner or later. Isn’t that right, old timer?”

“Skittles is six.”

“Isn’t that really old in cat years?” Killian straightened his back and looked directly at me. “You still look good even when you just got up, Meg.”

“I didn’t just get up.”

Killian shrugged. “Still hot, and I know what you’re thinking, but Raymond can’t throw me out of here. He works for me, remember?”

“He’s meant to be protecting me.”

“From McIntyre and his goons, not from me.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” I grumbled, underneath my breath.

Killian shoved both hands into his pockets, and his smirk grew wider. “Want to try your luck, Meg?”

I shifted from one foot to the other and scowled. “You should be in the office in New York.”

Killian took a step towards me and paused. “I should.”

“You shouldn’t be in Miami.”

“Yes.”

“In my apartment.”

“I know.”
