“I’ve seen her around Mara’s family and Mara’s other friends before. We run in the same social circles back home, and she’s not exactly looked upon with kind eyes, if you know what I mean.”

That made me feel a semi-modicum of relief knowing she was the pariah, just like I had been.

“She didn’t even care that he was married, Sophie. She broke my entire life apart and I almost self-destructed.”

“Keyword, almost. From what I’ve heard you tell me, she’s the one that made you stronger.”

“I still hate the bitch.”

“Hate away,” Sophie said, finishing her cocktail with a loud slurp. “But she’s here, doing the same thing as you, so maybe put a cork in the anger and keep pushing on.”

I hated to admit it, but Sophie was absolutely right. I had no right to punish Genevieve here, on this island, making it a misery for everyone else. I would keep my distance and then, on my way home, I would continue hating her.

“We should get back,” Sophie said, standing again. “Shower and all, we have a networking lunch today.”

“What lunch?”

“You really need to read that programme. It’s the first networking lunch, where we all just have lunch and mingle. It’s really just a boozy lunch, followed by free time before the party tonight.”

“Like last night?”

“No, that was super low key. The party in the nightclub. It usually ends with half the women vomiting in bushes outside but it’s actually pretty amazing.”

“Sounds like we’re just doing a hell of a lot of partying here.”

“Well yeah,” she said, as we headed out of the pool. “But we also make friends and get super awesome stuff from the talks.”

We headed back to the hotel to change for our boozy lunch. I was actually, for the first time since coming here, looking forward to it.

Genevieve be damned, I was going to have a good time tonight.

Mara and Rose were talking by the champagne fountain and it looked serious. I’d never seen Rose serious since I’d met her so I stayed my ground and kept my distance. I had to keep my wits about me if Matilda was here. The way she looked at me in the breakfast hall earlier had me shaking, in a way I’d never shook before. I’d felt absolute fear…no, it wasn’t fear…it was…something exciting that I couldn’t put my finger on.

It would end in an altercation, as it should given what happened to the woman after Scott’s true nature came out. God, even I hated the scoundrel now. To think I actually wanted that man as my husband one day.

It sent chills down my spine to think about it.

The collective group most people knew as the E’s passed by me in their shimmery silver dresses that somehow all matched and yet were in different styles. Sophie, the kind one, was standing over by the windows, looking out at the water. I’d recognised her from the same circles we ran in back home. Her family were old money, super rich and super aristocratic but something told me she was nothing like that. Her husband rarely attended but from the whisperings around the social scene, he wasn’t exactly welcome.

I was about to go and speak to her when I saw who was with her.

My heart sped up just a little, my stomach in knots as I looked over at the woman I barely recognised and yet my body recognised her immediately.

She was wearing a light blue mini dress that hugged every curve she had, her breasts were big and curvy in the dress, making her cleavage shine from where I stood. She had her hair up, just a few tendrils falling down around her face, circa Pammy Anderson in the 90s.

I could feel the familiar throbbing between my legs just as my confusion mounted. Why the hell was I fantasizing having her legs wrapped around my waist as I plundered my fingers into her wet core.

Shit. I needed air.

As I was about to leave, I caught sight of her looking over at me. Her smile dropped instantly and the hatred rose yet again.

I turned on my heel and left the club, waiting for the fresh air to hit me, and wake me the fuck up. Someone grabbed me and I turned around expecting it to be Matilda but it was Rose.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, just needed some air. I might skip tonight.”
