This had to be a gift from the universe telling me I had originally been right in wanting nothing to do with her.
Why then did it hurt so much when she just rejected me?
I ran for the curb once I got out of the lift and I hailed a cab. Once I was in, and we were on our way out of the inner city, I felt a calm rest over me. The burning in my stomach and my chest was still there though.
Nothing a good drink couldn’t fix.
CHAPTER10
GEN
The doorbell sounded rightas I was about to give my dad his meal. He’d looked so poorly the last few days that I had barely left his house.
“Stop fussing,” he barked. “Go and see who it is.”
He never liked to be fussed over, but now he was sick, I felt like I needed to do that.
I ran down the hall to answer the door, only to step back in surprise when I looked at Mattie, standing there.
“Mattie.”
“Hi.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked her, dumbfounded.
“I want an explanation.”
“Oh,” I said. “Come in.”
She walked past me, that floral perfume invading my nostrils and making me think back to the way she had smelt as she came around my mouth. I closed the door and ushered her into the dining room.
“Fancy.”
“I guess,” I said as she looked around the large room. “How did you know I was here?”
“It didn’t take a rocket scientist, Gen. How about you answer me this…why were you pushing for a relationship with me so much when you just up and leave right as I was about to give it a shot?”
She was angry.
I could see it in her eyes.
She had every right to be. I’d tried to push her away and all I did was break her heart. Just like I had when she caught me sleeping with Scott.
“I’m sorry, Mattie. I just…my dad is not well.”
Mattie’s hard expression instantly changed to one of concern. “Oh, why didn’t you say that back at the apartment or when I had messaged you?”
“I just…I’ve never had to explain to anyone before. It’s a new concept to me.”
She wanted to be angry with me, I could see it but she just couldn’t be.
“Is he okay?”
“Doctors don’t think he will see the end of the year but there’s hope with a new drug that could help him.”
Mattie instantly closed the distance between us and hugged me tightly. I was thankful for the connection, and I hugged her back as the tears fell down my cheeks, silently. I’d not had time to focus on the reality of losing my dad. I’d lost my biological dad before I could get to know the man, but my step-dad had been there from the start.
“Call me when you need me, okay?” she said as she pulled away. I nodded and we were almost out the door when my dad called out to me to invite her in. Mattie looked at me scared but I just shrugged my shoulders.
