Are we good?

Three little words that could make or break our relationship. I didn’t hesitate.

M

Of course we are. I’ll come over tomorrow and tell you everything you want to know.

She sent me the kiss emoji and I put my phone away. Getting up, I moved into the bathroom and looked at my red and watery eyes in the mirror. It had to be love if I was reacting like this.

Surely.

Thankful that my new relationship wasn’t over, I got undressed and stepped under the warm spray of my shower to wash away the bad juju of the day.

CHAPTER12

MATTIE

Veruca’s shopwasn’t open today for some strange reason but she did this every now and then. She would take off for a weekend away without notice. I sighed, wishing like hell I could speak to her about the events of the last few days. Gen and I were still on shaky ground but we were working our way through it. I was actually happy for the first time in a long time.

My new island cosmetics range was in the works with a release early summer and I was working things out with Gen, but I had a good feeling about it.

What could possibly go wrong?

I headed down the street, I was making my way to the cafe I normally went to for my butterscotch latte with extra butterscotch. It was my kryptonite and one I wouldn't share with anyone else.

That’s when I saw them.

My heart skipped a beat. Why had I tested the universe by asking what could go wrong? This could.

When he noticed me, I tried to keep walking but he was crossing the street because he knew he was the last person I would ever want to speak to right now.

Shit, shit shit. I did not need this right now.

“Mats,” he called out.

Damn it. Slowly, I turned around to see him coming up behind me. I put on my fake smile and pretended like this wasn’t bothering me.

“Scott,” I said. “How nice to see you.”

His wife toddled up behind him, wary of who he was talking to. She knew who I was, I could see it in her eyes but she was being nice enough not to tell him to walk away.

“Wow, Matts, you look…great.”

“Ah,” I tried to think of what to say while also realizing his wife was right next to him as he ogled his ex-wife. “Thank you, I guess.”

“What have you been up to?” he asked, and it actually seemed like he was interested.

“Uh, just working away, you know.”

“Yeah, so you with anyone?” he asked me. I could see the interest in his eyes, the one I remembered when we first started dating. I could feel repulsion rising in my throat but I batted it away.

“Scott,” his wife tried to pull him away. “We have an appointment.”

“Just go without me,” he ordered her. His tone was menacing. Something I hadn’t noticed before when I had married him. She slunk away, without looking back at me. I’d done that. When he had told me to buzz off at work functions or the like, I would always be the dutiful wife.

Jesus. I had been so under the thumb, I hadn’t even noticed the manipulation I was under.
