“Why would you even talk to him?” she asked me.

“What is going on with you?” I queried as I stood up and looked at the mess she was becoming. “Why aren’t you happy that I was finally able to slap him down with my words?”

“Because you shouldn’t have engaged with him. What did he even want?”

“He was just being his skeezy self,” I said. “Why are you upset?”

“Why?” she repeated. “Are you serious? You just told your girlfriend that you were happily talking to your ex-husband.”

“I wouldn’t say I was happy about it but when I got in the stinger of a line at the end, I felt rejuvenated.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him about us.”

“You what?” Gen all but erupted on the spot. “So let me get this straight, you didn’t want to tell our friends or family but you’re happily telling your ex about us?”

I backed up. “Are you kidding me? You think this is about shame? I told Veruca, she’s pretty much my only friend in the city. I don’t have a family as you well know so what the hell are you spouting about? Do your friends know about me?”

Gen looked a little nervous, probably realizing that she was losing her ever loving mind and I had the upper hand here.

“Of course they don’t,” I said, knowing the silence that stretched among us was her answer. “I don’t even know why we try. Mind blowing sex isn’t the answer to everything.”

I grabbed my bag but she blocked my exit. “I just wanted you for my own.”

“Gen…I want you. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t but I am not going to be subjected to this emotional trauma every time you get jealous. This should have been a win for me, a win…you understand what he did to me, you know what it did to me, and yet instead of being happy I finally got one over him, you are upset because I had the audacity to speak to the man.”

I pushed her out of the way and stormed out. She called my name but I didn’t turn back as I headed for the waiting lift. Once I was in, I heard her running for the doors but they closed before she could get to them.

Anger coursed through me again, not even a week after the last time I stormed out. I didn’t understand her anger at me talking to Scott. Why hadn’t she just been happy for me?

GEN

I sat back down on my sofa, my heart breaking in a million pieces. She had a point, why couldn’t I just be happy for her? It would have been massive for her to be able to get one up on him but she had to use our new relationship as the centerpiece of the backlash. I felt used but I knew that was crazy, I wasn’t being used. I saw the pain in her eyes when she yelled at me. Everything she said to me made perfect fucking sense. I’d never been a jealous person. No matter the amount of times my sugar daddies had made excuses to go back to their wives and not one blink of a tear but right now my chest was tearing itself in two.

Grabbing my bag, I headed out the door into the fresh air, hoping like hell I would find some clarity before tears came. I headed straight for the bar I used to frequent all the time when I first moved into the apartment. It was always known to have the odd layabout around but mostly it was full of the well to do due to the fact the cocktails cost a pretty penny and frankly the bartender was always easy to talk to. Maybe I needed a complete stranger to tell me I was being a fucking baby.

When I walked in, I almost immediately wanted to back out. Veruca was sitting there, with a few of her friends. Friends that I recognised as the E’s.

How could she be friends with them and friends with Mattie?

Eva was nowhere to be found however, so I counted my blessings. I took a seat at the bar and ordered a negroni.

I felt Esme and Ella before they spoke, each on one side of me. An attack if ever I’d seen one.

“So,” Esme began. “We heard a little something about you and our pal Matilda.”

“If she were your pal, I’d know it but also she doesn’t like Matilda.”

Esme seemed taken aback but Ella simply chuckled.

“We just wanted to know is all.”

“Ella, if you wanted to know, you would call her. But since she hasn’t heard a peep from either of you since she got back, I doubt it. You’re here for gossip to spread to your queen bee.”

They both slid off their stools and headed back to their table, their tails tucked firmly between their legs.

“Well, well,” I heard Veruca say from behind me. “You certainly do have a bark on you.”
