I didn’t want to turn into an alcoholic mess and end up drunk texting her so I got back to my apartment and I pulled my phone from my pocket.

G

I’m sorry.

I waited for the little three dots to appear but nothing. When I saw she had read the message but not responded, my stomach dropped.

She was still mad.

Had I gone and done it? Had I ruined the best thing that had happened to me in years?

CHAPTER13

GEN

The carsin my father’s driveway were making me anxious. He hadn’t had guests for weeks now because he’d been too frail to stand up and he hated to look weak. I saw his nurse exiting the house and that’s when he appeared in the doorway in a suit.

What in the fucking hell was this?

He was not supposed to be working.

I got out of my car and headed for the front door. He smiled at me, welcomingly as he always did when he saw me as the nurse got into her car and waved goodbye.

“What the hell, dad?”

“Oh I’ve got the best news, come in and I’ll show you.”

I stepped inside and had him take me down the hall to his bedroom. His hospital set up was gone and his bedroom had returned to what it had once been. That’s when I turned to him, but I noticed he looked healthy. The color in his cheeks had returned and he no longer looked gaunt in the face.

“Dad are you crazy?”

“Honey, look,” he said, pointing to the x-rays and folder of test results in his hand. “I took an experimental drug and it worked. They told me today that I was officially disease free.”

“The disease they couldn’t even tell you what it was and now it’s just miraculously gone?”

“Turns out it was a few viral infections tossed in with a disease but I took these drugs and now it’s gone. They tested me a couple dozen times but it’s all clear. I’m fine now.”

“I don’t understand,” I said, looking at the results which told me he was all clear once again. “What drug did you take?”

“Oh we don’t need to get into the nitty gritty.”

“It’s illegal, isn’t it?” I said, putting the folder down on his desk. “Are you crazy?”

“Well, aren’t you happy I’m better, honey?”

“Of course I fucking am,” I spat at him. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Relax, it was just a little tincture I had and you know what, it’s helped me to the point modern medicine didn’t so I’m not judging.”

“Dad, if the board found out, you’d lose the company.”

“No I wouldn’t,” he said quickly. “Don’t you worry so much. Tell me what’s going on in your world.”

I could barely figure out my own life right now. Mattie still hadn’t responded to my apology, and I wondered if I had pushed her too far. My mind had even gone so far as to think she had gone back to Scott.

Even though I knew that was crazy.

“Not much.”
