“First of all, Sadie…howdid you find out how to get here?” Morpheus asked.

I bit my lip and looked away. Of the three, I knew he’d be the most suspicious.

“Sadie?”he pressed.

I wasn’t ready to tell them yet that I let Finn out of the prison. “It’s a long story. I just want to get you all out. That’s all that matters.” I plopped down in a chair. “I think I get it now. The vampire who Aunt Naima intended for this to happen to is immortal. He can’t die. He probably didn’t want to die. His own personal hell—whatever that is—would have had him begging for death.”

“Well, we’re not begging for death,” Altair stated.

“That’s the thing…” I exhaled sharply. “I don’t know how much time you have left here if I don’t do something.”

“What do you mean?” Altair asked.

“Being in the void would have made the immortal vampire beg for death, which wouldn’t have been granted…”

“…and we desire the exact opposite.” Morpheus frowned. “Life.”

“Yes,” I exclaimed, shuffling through grimoire after grimoire in Aunt Naima’s desk. “I have to find a loophole. I know there’s a loophole other than this bloody sacrifice theory.”

“Sadie.” Morpheus lay a hand on my shoulder and gently spun me around. “You came here to be with us again. If there’s nothing you can do to reverse the spell, don’t spend what precious energy you have left on a magic spell that might not work in the void.”

“But I have to!”

“No, you don’t, Sadie. My brothers and I are going to figure this out.” Altair joined us. “We want you to live. Besides, you don’t have enough magic now to do this. I can feel it. And this place has no energy to steal. It’s…devoid.”

“So, we know how to create some?” I exchanged glances between them. Something inside me suddenly shifted, and my feelings that had been muddled since my disappearance in the void became sharp and clear. Adrenaline rushed through me whenever they were around. Being in their presence felt like a powerful stimulant. Their touch was only a reminder of what was possible…

Escape was not as important to me as being with them.

Altair was the first to kiss me, sweeping me up in his arm and capturing my lips. “We’re going to take care of you and then find some way to get you back. You can’t go back to—”

“Shhh,” I pressed a finger to his lips. “We all need to feed, Altair. Don’t you agree?”

“Feed for what? There’s no one to fight here.” He frowned.

“He’s right,” Dominik agreed.

“No.” I couldn’t believe they had given up. “Don’t you want to fight for me?”

“You are alive, Sadie. That’s all that matters. And we know you can hold up the protection barriers over Shadow World until we figure this out. No unwanted enemy can enter unless you allow them entry,” Morpheus chimed in.

I thought of their father, Apollyn, and then immediately banished that thought. I wouldn’t ruin this by telling them how adamant he was about re-entry into Shadow World.

“I need you. I can’t bare the thought of being away from you while you’re all lost here in a void.” I touched them briefly on the face. “Please, I need this time with you. The energy we create will be a special bonus.”

They came to me at once, alternating between kissing my lips, face, and neck. Multiple sets of hands on my body made me forget that we were in some manifested fake reality. The place might have been fake, but I knew this was real. I had accomplished the first step: I was with them. But now, I just needed to get them back safe with me on Shadow World before everything started to fall apart.

“Don’t worry about that, my queen,” Altair whispered against my earlobe. “You are strong enough to sustain Shadow World yourself. I have no doubt. It’s what we trained you to do, knowing what we know. Knowing that we’d do anything to protect you and to protect that realm. You must stay there, within its borders until we can get back.”

Oh, if they only knew…

I couldn’t stay put. There was too much at stake. Too much to do. Too many adversaries to shield myself from.

He was in my head again, but in a way, I was thankful he could read my mind so easily. All the things that were bothering me when I lost them were circling around in my mind, even as they embraced and caressed me.

Altair continued, “We belong to the shadows, Sadie, and one day we might have to return to the shadows. Do not fear that day. It’s a long way off.”

“But—”
