“Absolutely not. I deal in trades. I acquired that piece through trade.”

Nostro sniffed the blade. “From who?”

“Don’t worry about who? It’s none of your business.”

Nostro glanced up with ice blue eyes and anger crumpling his stark-white face. “This is ours. It belonged to one of our elders. Where did you get it?”

“I said, it’s none of your business.”

Nostro, with super vampire speed, shot to the other end of the room and wrapped his fingers around Aunt Naima’s throat tightly.

She shrieked.

Nostro forced her head to the side and examined her jugular. “I said from who and from where did you get this?”

“I’m warning you! I’ve made my blood poison to vampires. You will die if you drink,” she panted.

“Who said I was going to drink from you? I could snap your neck as quick as your next heartbeat.”

“You devil!” She shouted. “What I have planned for you will be final and absolute. There will be no escape from it. None.”

“All right then. I’ll get what I need the hard way,” Nostro hissed between a pair of clenched fangs.

Aunt Naima stilled and tried to reach for something on the counter but it was too late. She had already been charmed by the vampire Nostro and one look into her eyes revealed what he needed to know.

“A girl. A girl brought you this. Sydney, the treasure hunter…ah, I see. And you are related by blood. Well, this is nice.”

“You insipid beast,” Aunt Naima gasped.

Vampire Nostro released his hold and darted toward the door. “You are of no use. Perhaps I shall go pay her a visit then.”

“No!” Aunt Naima gasped and grabbed the snow globe, but she moved too slow. Too slow for a centuries old vampire who teleported out of sight.

I disengaged myself from the vision, gasping to regain my bearings. Loki, who was right beside me, slipped into my lap, soothing me.

I understood now.

Aunt Naima was trying to trap the vampire lord with the magical globe but she had failed. The spell wasn’t meant for execution on my demons, and yet it had happened.

I hadn’t freed my demons…yet.

But I had learned two things.

What Mika said was true. Sydney crossed paths with the vampire Nostro at least once. I was almost certain the vampire’s insistence to learn how the dagger ended up in Aunt Naima’s shop caused their meeting.

Either way, Aunt Naima’s spell was final and absolute. She’d said it herself. There was a high probability I would never see my demon protectors again. Not in this life. Not unless I did something drastic.

I rushed over to the cordless phone set on the counter, breathing a sigh of relief when I picked up the receiver and heard the dial tone. Before I could stop myself, I dialed a cell phone number—a number I only knew from memory because of the many times I planned to call it requesting the owner for help with my missing sister problem.

But every time I got the urge to call, I just couldn’t. After all, her family had moved away just to break free from my old coven. Now I understood why.

Still I missed Millicent. Just as much as I missed my sister. After her family joined another coven, our once-in-a-blue-moon phone conversations revolved around nothing but mundane-ish issues like if and who we were dating, what we were making for dinner, and how much we enjoyed our jobs outside of coven duties. I missed talking about little innocent spells and family drama.

“Hello?”

To my surprise, she answered.

I cleared my throat. “Um…ah…Millicent, it’s me, Sadie. I know it’s been a while, but I reallyreallyneed your help with something. Can you meet me at my apartment?”
