My eyes widened in shock, but I wasn't surprised with my sister's actions. "Yes, after that...what happened after that?"

"I wanted to know where she got the dagger. Apparently she hunts them down. She's drawn to artifacts with magic and she told me she found them when she was scavenging through an old Viking shipwreck with some archeologists. Said she gave it to her aunt because it held no value to her and it wasn't what she was looking for. But she said she was looking for another ancient dagger of Viking origins almost like it."

"Yes...and...?" I urged.

Nostro chuckled. "I told her to encroach carefully or lose her life in the process. That was the end of our discussion."

"What?" I shivered in disappointment.

"That's all I know." He shrugged, refilling his glass.

"You led me on. That couldn't have been where the conversation stopped. What did you do, just vanish away after she said she was looking for another dagger like it."

Nostro grinned and his icy eyes gleamed. "That is precisely what I did. I mean I warned her of the consequences, but I could tell she was going to go look for it anyway."

I sighed in defeat. "So she was searching for more magical artifacts? Look, is there anything else you can tell me?"

"Depends. I haven't fed from a new mistress of magic in a very very long time. You magic wielders can be quite tasty.” Nostro licked his lips.

"Forget it, vamp!" I held up my hand and a spray of energy hit him back into the wall.

He got up and dusted his shoulders off. "Now that wasn't nice. I am gentleman, little witch, but I can think of other ways to get you back for that."

"You wouldn't," I warned.

"You need more from me than I need from you." He stretched out his arms, demonstrating his authority and upper-hand over me.

"Are you going tell me or not? I need to know why you warned her and then just vanished when she told you what she was looking for."

"Because what she's looking for will likely kill her…if it hasn’t already.”

Chapter 12

Sadie

Nostro couldn't be serious. What did he and Sydney know about this dagger that I didn't know.

I had been so sure she was running away from Finn and the oppressive coven, but now I had undeniable evidence that she was on a mission of her own. I couldn't comprehend why she would be so determined to get her hands on an ancient blade with the power to kill her. What did she want with it? What could possibly make it worth the risk?

Nostro greedily filled his glass yet again, his gaze on me like a hawk. I was relieved he couldn't decipher my thoughts. If he could, what would make him think I'd be willing to let him in? That was only for Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik, and even then I had to work hard to keep them out of my head.

Yet, here I was standing her with an alcoholic vampire with a penchant for picking up strays off the streets. Who knew? He and my aunt were competing over who got to house the next homeless orphan.

"You were expecting a monster," he said suddenly.

"I was."

"Then why did you come alone? Why did you even come at all? My fledglings could've drain you out in the courtyard."

I pressed my lips together smugly. "They could have tried, but they would've all been dead in your courtyard."

He sucked in a deep breath and his face hardened. "You're just like her. Your aunt – she was something else. Fearless, that's what she was. I still don't know why we couldn't get along. She used to say she could put me in a type of hell so miserable that I would beg for death. But I never feared her and I would never beg for death," he said smugly, showing off his crooked teeth in a sly grin.

His face softened and his lips formed a grim line. His eyes filled with sadness as he softly whispered, "But I am sorry she is now dead even though she wanted to kill me."

"Do you know anything more about this theory you have that my sister would meet her demise if—"

Before I could finish the room shook violently. A chorus of screams filled the air from the outside room.
