Samson wanted me to come to him. I wouldn't. His ravenous wolves had my scent. I didn't care. If I continued going back to earth, it wouldn't be long before they caught me.

Chapter 16

Sadie

Iwas going back to find Loki. If my friends knew one thing about me, they knew I'd never desert them. I considered Loki my new friend at this point. And I felt responsible for him after Aunt Naima perished.

I wasn't afraid of Samson's wolves. I wasn't afraid of Samson. He wasn't going to keep me away from earth or from my home—my apartment.

If those wolves came back hunting for me. I had something for thing.

Pulling into a long, black cloak, I stuffed a satchel of herbs and a bottle of wolfsbane into my pocket and uttered the spell that would teleport me back to earth.

My heart raced as I made my way to the very spot where I felt Loki's presence before the wolves started chasing me.

I heard my name echoing far away and out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed a bright red car zooming into the driveway. Before I could comprehend what was happening, Millicent had jumped out of the car with my beloved Loki in her arms. She smiled a mischievous grin and shouted a familiar greeting towards me - leaving me speechless.

Millicent hoped out of the car and ran up to me with Loki. "I thought I saw you before pulling off. I was just at the stop sign. I was getting ready to leave."

"Milli!" I threw my arms around her and Loki, who only meowed and jumped down to the pavement. "What are you doing here? How did you find Loki?"

"That guy..." She pointed to Loki. "Was roaming around outside when I got here? I found it odd that you weren't here or in your apartment which was unlocked by the way. That's not like you. I was worried. I know you wouldn't leave your new cat behind. I was going to take him with me so he wasn't out on the streets."

I sighed in relief. "Thank you. We were here last night when Loki disappeared." I kept out the part about my teleportation into the void to see my demons. "I went outside to look for him and Samson's shifters started chasing me."

"What the fuck," she exclaimed. "That bastard. He has no right to do that. It's clear as day that you're not going through with that betrothal."

"Yeah, I know. I'm going to have to face him one day, but I don't have time for him right now. I really don't. I have so much other shit to deal with."

Millicent folded her arms across her chest. "Right. Like the fact that your sister is still missing and the demons you love so much are in hell...well, not that hell, but you know what I'm talking about. What did you find out?"

"So much. So, so much..." I breathed. "I do know that wherever Sydney went, she went there on her own. She's on her own mission and all of this probably had nothing to do with that freaking moon orb like Finn insisted. She's looking for something. A dagger. An old ancient Viking dagger that some vampire claims will kill her is she tries to retrieve it."

"Vampires, now?" Millicent rolled her eyes. "I swear. Between you and Sydney, I don't know how gets into the most trouble. You're like two peas in a pod. It's no wonder my father said we can't be friends."

"I'm so sorry, Millicent."

"You know what. I don't care what my father says. He can't tell me who I can be friends with. That's my decision and I made it a long time ago."

I pressed a palm to her face. "Don't get on your father's bad side on my account. Please don't do that. I don't want you to regret it." I didn't want to say too much, but I was thankful that one of us still had a father on earth to talk to—one that was going to look after his daughter no matter what.

"But Sadie, that's not why I'm here...I came because..." She swallowed visibly.

Suddenly, I felt a lump rising up my throat as the look of eager curiosity on her face turned into a dreadful frown.

"What is it?"

"An elder from your old coven came to pay my father a visit. I was dragged into the meeting against my will, but don't worry, I never told them you have me access to ancestral magic. I won't tell them I have that until I'm ready," she said.

"Good." I nodded. "That's your decision, but what did an elder want with your father?"

"They're still very angry with you for cutting off access from ancestral magic. They said.." She gagged on her own words.

"They said what, Millicent?" I urged.

"They said if you don't regrant them access and that if continue to betray them and refuse to renounce your ties to demons, then they will locate you and burn you until you're nothing but ashes."

Ashes. Ashes. Ashes.
