He chuckled, then pinned me with a heavy look. “Thanks for everything, Miss Emma.” He placed a kiss on the corner of my mouth and walked out of the kitchen. A couple of moments later, he was out the door.

I sagged against the counter, my core still thrumming from the orgasm he’d given me. It was all so unfair, but I couldn’t bring myself to wish that he’d never knocked on my door last night.

ChapterFour

EMMA

Almost two weeks had gone by since the sexfest. I’d managed to keep from seeing Kiernan around town, which was both heartbreaking and a life raft. I pictured his lazy smile and still felt his arms around me from when we had danced. Sometimes, I could smell the warm, spicy cologne he’d worn the night of the wedding.

I let out a long sigh and curled my legs under me on the couch. Taya and Bristol were over and while I’d been avoiding the couch since that night, I also couldn’t bring myself to let them sit where Kiernan had blown my mind.

“Care to enlighten us?” Taya asked.

Bristol’s gaze was just as curious, but she’d never pry. A lifetime of having an entire county in her business had made her respectful of others’ privacy.

“I’m fine,” I said, failing to summon a believable tone.

“You haven’t been since the night of the wedding,” Taya said. “Each day that goes by, I suspect something happened. But you’ve been silent, and Kiernan has quit coming into the coffee shop.”

“He hasn’t mentioned anything at work,” Bristol said.

“I doubt he’d mention what we did,” I muttered, heat infusing my face. “It’s not suitable for work.”

Bristol’s eyes widened, and Taya gasped.

Taya leaned forward so far it was amazing she was still seated in the chair. “You two? Really?”

“I can see it,” Bristol said.

“I know.” Tears pricked the backs of my eyes. “I can too, and that’s the problem. It was so good, but he’s moving.”

“And you don’t want to?” Bristol asked.

“My job’s here,” I said. “My family.”

Taya frowned like she didn’t understand. “Bozeman’s three hours away.”

Bristol was just as confused. “Aren’t there nursing jobs literally everywhere?”

“You guys aren’t helping,” I mumbled.

Taya shook her head. “Maybe if we knew what to help with, we could.”

I slumped against the cushions. “Every relationship I’ve had, we’ve ended on friendly terms. I could leave with him and then get friend-zoned.”

“As pissy as Kiernan’s been since that night,” Bristol said. “I don’t think friendliness was anywhere on his mind. It makes a lot of sense, actually.”

“What does?” I asked.

She lifted a shoulder. “Before you, he’d go on dates, it didn’t work out, business as usual. But he’s been in a shitty mood. I thought it was the stress of the move and even that he’d miss us.” She smirked. “But he’s missing the booty.”

I fake scowled at her. Did leaving me bother him as much as it did me?

Taya was nodding. “And just like him, you’re pissy, and you usually aren’t. You’re usually disappointed when a relationship doesn’t work out. But not melancholy. Sulky. Moody.”

“I get it.” Were they right? Was Kiernan already different?

“I’m guessing the sex was off the charts.” Bristol might not pry, but she made blunt observations. “You wouldn’t be like this if it was meh.”
