‘Oh, I don’t think so.’ Her gaze met his from underneath her lashes. ‘I think I would have remembered you.’

And he would have remembered her...oh, yes, he would.

He took another step. ‘What is your name?’

‘Why should I tell you?’ The light shimmered across the silver fabric of her dress, and she raised one blonde brow. ‘Your Majesty.’

A challenging woman. Oh, he liked that. He liked that very much. She knew who he was and yet from the heated glitter in her eyes, she was not intimidated by him. Not at all.

It’s been a long time. Too long.

Over a whole year and still he thought about that night at the ball with the beautiful grey-eyed woman. She’d had no idea who he was. With her he’d been just a man and she’d wanted that man so passionately.

As if it didn’t matter what a liar you are...

Galen ignored the thought. That night was over and the woman—Solace had been her name, he’d discovered later—long gone. But tonight...well, this woman was right in front of him, and the night was still young, and maybe Augustine had been right. Maybe he did need to let the leash off. He’d make sure Kostas wouldn’t know and, besides, he knew from experience that abstinence only made things harder. Every so often it was necessary to let off steam in order to prevent any more mistakes, and if this woman was here and she wanted him...

Galen took another step to test her. There were only inches between them now, and he could smell her subtle scent, warm female flesh and the sweetness of lilies.

She didn’t move, only watched him, so slowly he put one hand on the wall beside her head and then, after a moment, did the same with the other, caging her.

There was no alarm in her dark eyes, only that burning flame, that heat. Reminding him that he wasn’t just a king, but a man as well, and that man was hungry. No, that man was starving.

Her gaze dropped to his mouth and his body hardened instantly, the warmth of her intoxicating.

Yes. It seemed shewasinterested after all.

Theos, he hadn’t felt this intensely about a woman in years. If he ever had.

You did, remember?

No, he was not going to think of her. He would obliterate the memory of her piercing grey eyes and the silver flames that had burned in them with this woman. Now. Tonight.

‘Feel free to leave.’ He leaned in, inhaling her, his lips almost but not quite brushing hers. ‘At any time.’

It was then that he realised she was trembling. Yet it wasn’t with fright.

Because her gaze lifted from his mouth, and he felt the moment she locked eyes with him. The impact was almost physical.

Then abruptly she leaned forward and kissed him.

CHAPTER TWO

SOLACEKNEWSHEhad to be the one to make the first move. It was vital in keeping him off balance so he wouldn’t recognise her, not to mention making sure the power stayed with her. Because she wasn’t going to let him take control, not again. Not the way he had that night at the ball, when he’d overwhelmed her first with unexpected kindness, and then with passion. Her life had been turned on its head in that moment, leaving all her careful plans for a future in ruins.

Before him, she’d been a woman who’d finally got her crappy life in order and was starting to think that maybe, just maybe shecouldhave all the things she’d wanted back when she’d been a lonely girl in the foster system.

Then he’d come along and shown her the one thing her life had been missing—his touch. And her glittering future had gone up in smoke.

But it was going to be different this time, because this timeshewas in control. This timeshewas going to upend his life the way he’d upended hers, and she was going to take back the one good thing he’d given her: her son.

Galen had come after her as she’d hoped he would, but now she had to steel herself and keep her head, not let the powerful current of their physical chemistry wash her away.

Yet the moment her lips touched his, she could feel that steel begin to fracture.

The way he stood in front of her, looming over her, his arms on either side, caging her in. Surrounding her with his heat and his scent. Blocking out the rest of the nightclub, blocking out the entire world...

It had been like that that night, when he’d held her against the wall in the deserted office, his powerful body between her and the world, making her feel protected and safe. It had been an intoxicating experience for a woman who’d never felt either of those things before, not in her entire life.
