Riggs chuckles. "Looks like he takes after you."

The other dog owner nods and passes by us, keeping her pet away from ours.

I inquire, "Oh? How does he take after me?"

Riggs grins. "He doesn't back down."

I squint. "And you like that about me?"

His face turns serious. He slides his palm on my cheek. Kindness and love fill his expression, making me yearn to be back to normal more than ever. He softly replies, "Of course I do. Don't you know that?"

I confess, "I didn't, but I guess I do now."

He steps closer and gives me a chaste kiss.

The puppy jumps up at us, barking.

I glance down. "Someone's jealous."

Riggs looks sternly at the dog and asserts, "We're going to have to work on this."

The dog barks back at him.

Riggs chuckles and continues to lead me down the street. He stops outside a pet shop. "Let's go inside and buy some food."

We step inside, and I snap my fingers. "I know what I want to name him."

"Oh?" Riggs asks.

My lips twitch. "King Madden."

Riggs glances at the dog and then leans into my ear. In his demanding tone that always makes my adrenaline perk up, he states, "That's fine, pet. But just so we're clear, there's only one ruler in our house."

Butterflies take off inside me. There's so much between us that I still don't know how to solve. But I've never wanted him to take control and return to issuing me commands as much as I do right now.

Blakely and I spend the rest of the day playing with King Madden on the beach and in the house. He's full of energy, and the way my pet's face beams makes me happier than I've been in a long time.

King Madden is super protective of her. I playfully slapped her ass earlier, and he growled and snipped at me. She's definitely the one he's choosing to be his favorite, but I'm okay with it.

For dinner, we grilled steaks and ate on the deck. King Madden never left her lap. Now, the sun's setting and the daylight's fading. I sip my beer and stare at my precious wife, who's smiling at her puppy, looking more beautiful than ever.

She glances at me and tilts her head. "Why are you staring at me?"

My heart pounds harder. I debate about bringing it up. We've had a great day, but there's still so much more we need to talk about. And I want to get past our issues once and for all.

Her voice turns more serious. "What is it, Riggs?"

I decide not to be a coward. If we're putting everything out on the table, then I need to know something that's been bothering me. I tread carefully, asking, "Why didn't you tell me you thought you were pregnant?"

She freezes, her hand on King Madden's back. "Why are you asking me this?"

I take her hand and slide my thumb over the back of it. I attempt to not sound like I'm accusing her of anything and inquire, "If you were pregnant, would you have told me?"

She scrunches her forehead, answering, "Of course I would've told you. Besides, I couldn't have hidden it from you. You know a baby grows in your belly and gets big, right?"
