He tightens his hold around me, answering, "It wasn't meant to hurt you. I wouldneverhurt you."

His statement refuels all my anger. I blurt out, "You already did."

Guilty remorse crosses his expression. He nods. "I know. I didn't mean to. I promise you, I didn't mean to."

I stare at him, more tears falling, unsure where to go from here, struggling with wanting his body around mine and the fight to push him out of my life forever.

He holds the back of my head, presses his mouth to mine, and slips his tongue between my lips.

I cave, reacting to him with a need too great to ignore, then somehow finding the willpower to retreat. I break the kiss and barely get out, "No."

"Pet—"

"No, Riggs! You can't just come in here and use your body to seduce me back into your life," I declare.

"Youarein my life. You willalwaysbe in my life," he asserts.

I shake my head. "You did this! You broke me! You brokeus!"

He swallows hard, then replies, "I made a mistake. It will never happen again."

An emotion-filled laugh escapes me. "You'll never again use me to get at my father? Why? Because you've already destroyed him?"

Riggs clenches his jaw.

Tense silence fills the air. I can't stop crying, blinking as fast as I can, my lips trembling.

He claims, "Blakely, we have to get past this. I love you. You're the only thing in this world I love."

Every word cuts me deeper. I clasp his cheeks. "If that's true—"

"It is! Don't you dare doubt my love for you!" he exclaims.

I sniffle a few times, choking out, "That's the worst part about it, Riggs. I won't ever understand how you can claim to love me but still did what you've done."

Agony fills his expression. A desperation I've never seen on him blooms to life. His voice cracks, and he says, "We have to get past this."

As much as I want to forget about everything, I can't. I sit up in bed and find my strength, announcing, "You have to go. Do not come back unless I tell you to."

"Don't say—"

"Now!" I scream, unable to control all the rage and sadness I feel.

"Pet—"

"You've destroyed us! You don't get to do that and slide back into bed with me. Now, get out! And I swear to God, Riggs, if you don't respect my wishes and give me the time I need, I will get an attorney," I threaten, hating every part of it.

He pins his eyes on me, and the blood pounding between my ears grows louder. Time stands still with neither of us moving.

He finally rises, leans over me, and kisses my forehead. With his lips brushing against my skin, he murmurs, "I love you. No matter what I've done, donotquestion it." He slowly leaves the room, closing the door behind him.

It only takes a few seconds before I miss him. I hold myself back from running after him, more confused than ever about how to get past this or if I should even try. The only thing I'm clear about is even after what he's done, I still love Riggs.

What scares me the most is I'm unsure how I'll ever be able to stop.
