"Then he should keep his hands off you and his eyes where they belong," I insist.

She groans and scrubs her hands over her face.

I remove them and state, "You don't deserve that type of unprofessional treatment."

She swallows hard, then announces, "You can't be in charge of my security anymore."

My stomach flips faster. "You don't mean that. You're just upset with me right now."

She closes her eyes and shakes her head.

"Pet—"

"No, Riggs. I'm telling you that this isn't going to work. You and Noah just don't get along. You can't put your differences aside. And you promised me if I changed my mind, you'd respect it. So I need you to honor your word," she asserts.

My entire world collapses all around me. First, my marriage is on the rocks, and now, my wife just fired me. I try not to beg and say, "We'll get rid of Noah. There are clauses I can have my attorney make a case on."

Her face hardens. "No."

It's another bomb hitting me at full blast. "No? You're going to choose him over me?" I question.

"It's not like that, Riggs."

"Sure looks like it from where I'm standing."

"It's not."

"Then let's get rid of him. Problem solved."

Red flames fill her cheeks. She seethes, "He's my agent. I'm here, in Detroit, singing my songs for a sold-out crowd because of him."

I sternly retort, "No, you're here because of your talent and hard work."

She shakes her head. "We both know how this industry works. It's all who you know. And you wanted me to pick my agent. I chose Noah, and he's doing his job. So until he doesn't, I'm not looking to jump ship."

Rage, disappointment, and shame all swirl within me. I've never been fired, but it's not only that. My wife is choosing Noah over me. I tell her, "Your security is more important than your agent. You can't replace your life."

She reaches up and caresses the side of my head. "I know. But I'm pretty sure that any man you trust, who's ballsy enough to put you in a headlock, is capable of making sure I'm safe."

"There's more to it than that," I proclaim.

"I can't do it anymore, Riggs. I can't be in the same room as you and Noah while you go at each other's throats."

"Like I said, we'll get you a new agent."

She stares at me with sad yet confident eyes and softly says, "No. Respect my wishes. I'm going to ask Kalim to take Benny's place."

It makes me realize there's nothing I can do. But at least she's choosing who I believe is the stronger of the two. So I switch gears from trying to keep things as is to not get eliminated completely. "Then let's compromise."

She furrows her eyebrows.

"I'll work with Kalim on your security but stay away from Noah."

"I don't see how that can work."

"Someone has to coordinate things with Kalim. Let me do that," I push.

She stays quiet for a minute.
