I didn’t want to.

Taylor pulled a chair out and sat down next to me at the dining table. “It’s going to be okay because we’re going to figure this out.”

“How?”

Taylor leaned forward and took both of my hands in hers. “I don’t know yet, but you’re not alone. I’m here.”

“Thanks, Tay.”

“What are you thanking me for? I haven’t done anything. I’m sorry Bernard hasn’t reached out.”

I shrugged and looked down at the table. “I guess not reaching out is my answer, huh?”

“Sometimes men are just stubborn,” Taylor replied with a tight squeeze. “I just don’t understand why he wouldn’t tell his ex. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Tears welled in the back of my eyes. “Yeah, I don’t get it either.”

Taylor threw an arm around my shoulders and sighed. “On the bright side, I did see you talking to Grant whenever you’ve passed by the office. I take it you two have cleared the air?”

I glanced up at Taylor and frowned. “Yeah, it sucks that he left the way he did, but I guess I understand not being ready for something.”

Taylor nodded. “Yeah, me too. He’s been asking about you, by the way, and wanting to know if there’s anything he can do to help.”

“He has?”

Taylor gave me a small smile. “Yeah, he definitely still cares about you.”

I blew out a breath and stood up. “That’s sweet.”

“You need a dependable guy in your life, Rach. Someone who will treat you and Ron well.”

I picked the plates up off the table and took them to the sink. “Are you trying to tell me I should give Grant another chance?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you.” Taylor stood up and wandered over to me. She nudged me aside and began to wash the dishes. “I know things didn’t work out last time, but I think this time will be different.”

“I don’t think I can think about that right now,” I replied without looking at her. “I think I should just focus on Ron.”

And nursing my broken heart back to health.

A few days later, when Ron and I stopped by Taylor’s to take her out for dinner, I ran into Grant outside her office, and Taylor’s words immediately came to mind. He crouched in front of Ron and pulled a pack of gum out of his pockets.

“Did you know that I’ve known you since before you were born?”

Ron took the gum and stared at him. “Are you and my mommy friends?”

“We are.” Grant stood back up and flashed me a smile. “You have a great mommy, Ron. I hope you know that.”

Ron tucked himself next to me and nodded. “I know.”

“Taylor is running late at a meeting. Why don’t you two come and wait in my office?”

Before I could protest, Ron took off after him, talking fast the entire time. I followed after them, walking past rows and rows of empty cubicles. On the other side of the floor, Grant paused and pushed the door open. He flicked the lights on, and fluorescent light flooded the room, momentarily blinding me. When I walked in, Grant left the door ajar before stepping behind his desk.

He gave me a bright smile before opening the refrigerator behind him. “I’ve got chocolate, and I’ve got soda. What do you think?”

Ron sat down on the couch and tucked his legs underneath him. “Can I have a soda, mommy, please?”

“Half a soda. We don’t want to spoil your dinner,” I responded. “But no chocolate until after dinner.”
