“This is ridiculously perfect.” Frank laughed, feeling the same excitement I felt. “I can’t believe I was shoveling shit at some local farm waiting to hear back from my uncle on a possible job at Army headquarters, and you two were here figuring out a new way of fighting a war. And I’m only hearing about this now?”

“Daniel didn’t want to say anything until he knew it would happen.” Zack shrugged. “We all know how disappointment can trigger shit for us if we’re not careful.”

“No hurt feelings on my end,” Frank smiled into his beer, “just pleased to be a part of it.”

“Me too.”

“So,” Frank looked around, “when do we start?”

“Not sure yet. Edison says maybe a week or two more. I know he’s looking for a psychologist who will not only work with the people we’ve retrieved but also us.”

“Smart. I think we can all agree that to keep our shit together is…”

“She’s for sure coming?” I faintly heard my mother say as I tuned out my buddies.

“Yes,” Dad assured her.

“I’m so excited to officially meet her. I know she’s very pretty and very well-spoken.” Mom nearly squealed. “You’re sure she’s coming?”

I held up the flipper. “I can hear you.”

“If he said she’s coming, she’s coming.” Dad ignored me.

“Of course, she’s coming. Look at him. So handsome and strong.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I huffed through a laugh.

I handed a plate of burgers to my cousin, who fed the kids first.

“He’s got the Logan charm. She’ll come.” Dad kissed Mom on the cheek when she rolled her eyes. “Come on, you know you can’t resist me.”

“I certainly can.” She pointed the baby oil bottle at him. “I just choose not to.”

“Right, because of my charm.”

“Your three,” Zack whispered as he walked by.

I looked at my three o’clock, and there she was. My stomach twisted into a happy knot of excitement. She wore short shorts over her one-piece bathing suit. She had a beach blanket tucked under one arm and held a huge bouquet of daisies in her other hand.

“Oh, I see my boy has the same swagger as I do,” I heard Dad say behind me.

“Would you look at our son’s face?” Mom cooed, and I ignored them with a chuckle.

Sue waved and pointed to an open spot on the sand, asking if it was okay to take it. I gave her a nod and made a beeline for her.

“I’m glad you came.” I picked up one side of the blanket and helped her smooth it out. “Are you hungry?”

“Starved,” Tracy piped in. I hadn’t even greeted her, as I’d only had eyes for Sue. I quickly made up for it.

“Hi, Tracy. I’m glad you could come. There are tons of burgers on the table. Please help yourself.”

“Thanks!” She raced off, leaving me alone with Sue. She gathered up her long brown hair in her hands and twisted it into a ponytail.

“Where’s your friend you said was coming?”

“Oh, that’s Frank.” I pointed to him. Frank stood and seemed to be having a serious chat with my father, but I knew they were both watching us.

“Army guy, too?”
