A flash of heat ignites behind his eyes. "Good girl."

Then he pulls out his fingers and wipes them on my T-shirt. "You have five minutes to get ready."

"How dare you break into my apartmen—”

“Technically, I didn’t break in; I have a key. Get with the program, dollface.”

“—then proceed to…to…"

"Make you almost come?" The jerkface smirks from the driver’s seat of the car.

True to his word, he gave me exactly five minutes to get dressed and follow him out. He didn’t allow me to get a coffee and declined to stop for one on the way to the stadium where he’s working out with his teammates.

"How did you get the key?” I ask through gritted teeth.

His smirk widens. "I have my ways."

Of course, he does. And he doesn’t need to paint a picture for me. Coming from the mafia, I know when underhanded methods are being used by someone, and clearly, that’s what he’s resorted to. Although…Why would he do that? Given he’s a public figure, can’t he see how much this could come back to hurt him?

"You have no boundaries." I throw the words at him as if they might affect his actions, even though I know they won’t.

"None at all. Especially not when it comes to you, Sparrow."

I glance away. I could fool myself into thinking that was a declaration of affection. But I know better. "You’re the one who’s going to practice, why do I need to come along with you?"

"Thought you’d enjoy the opportunity to visit a hallowed sporting ground like Lords?"

I hesitate. I’ve never been to Lords, although, of course, I’ve heard of the most famous, most prestigious cricket grounds in the world. And while I don’t follow sports, I’ve heard enough about it to appreciate not too many get a chance to visit it when there isn’t a match on. Not that I’m going to acknowledge that.

"I don’t want to go anywhere with you," I gripe.

"Too bad because I want us to be seen together. I want it to be known that we are together," he retorts.

"So I gathered from last night when you posed with me in front of the paparazzi. And you used me to catch the attention of the society high-fliers at the ball. But I thought that was—"

"A one-time instance?’

I nod.

"You were wrong. I want the word to spread that we’re seeing each other. That the daughter of the Warren family is dating the boy from the wrong side of the tracks."

I scowl. "Is that what this is about? You proving to the world how far you’ve come?"

"Or how much I’ve fallen. For everyone knows how corrupt your family is. The world knows how your father made his money, even though he may have shut them down from talking about it."

I swallow, then look out my window.

"I have nothing more to do with them," I say in a low voice.

"Not enough money for you, I take it? Did you want even more riches? Is that why you turned your back on your own family?"

"What? How could you possibly think that? I turned my back on them because—" I pause, then shake my head. "Forget it, you wouldn’t understand."

"Try me, Princess."

"I put distance between us from the day I betrayed you, okay?"
