A pulse leaps to life at his jawline. His eyes blaze. Then he bends his face and brushes my nose with his. "Is that a challenge, Sparrow?"
"That’s a—"
There’s a banging on the door. "Abby, Cade, are you in there?"
Solene’s voice reaches me.
I try to pull away again, but Cade doesn’t let me.
"Abby, you okay?" Her voice sounds worried.
Cade tilts his head as if daring me to say something to the contrary.
I tilt up my chin then call out, "I’m fine."
There’s silence, then Solene says, "We’re sitting down for lunch; thought you’d want to know before you’re both missed."
I turn toward the door. "We’ll join you shortly, Solene. You go ahead."
"You sure?" she asks.
"I’m sure. We’ll be there very soon."
"Okay." Her steps recede.
I try to slide off Cade’s lap, and this time, he lets me.
I head toward the door and unlatch the lock when he drawls, "Rain check then?"

She’s silent on the drive home. I insisted on dropping her back, and Zara backed me up, so Abby couldn’t refuse.Thank fuck.When I saw her pale, she looked on verge of a panic attack, and something inside me splintered wide open. I’m already more susceptible to emotions since deciding to insert myself back in her life, and the terrified look on her face pushed me over the edge.
All thoughts of fucking her flew out of my head, and instead, I lifted her in my arms. I cradled her and held her close until some of the color returned to her cheeks. Until her breathing stabilized and she seemed more composed. And even then, I didn’t want to let go of her. I wanted to cradle her and take care of her. I wanted to kiss her until she was no longer upset with me. Until she forgot how mean I’d been to her. Until she forgot every horrible thing I’ve said and done to her…
Until I forgot what she did to me. Until we could go back to the way it used to be when we could look at each other with that unadulterated happiness we felt whenever we met. Until that innocent fascination we once had for each other blossomed again.
How naive of me to think it possible to capture the feelings we once held for each other. How gullible am I to hope we could start all over again? How irrational for me to imagine we have a shot at some semblance of a relationship? This is what she does to me, my Sparrow, with her wide green eyes and her lush figure and wide hips, and her thick thighs and pouty lips. She makes me believe in unicorns and rainbows and all that emo shit I swore off.
It’s why I need to fuck her and get her out of my system. To complete what I set out to do. After all, it’s the reason I forced myself into her life, and it’s time to have my revenge.
I drive up to her apartment block and park. Then, before she’s able to step out of the car, I round the front and open her door. She slides out, then walks past me. I follow her up the steps of the building, up the stairs to the second story and inside her apartment. She crosses the floor of the living room, then walks into the bedroom. I shut the door and follow her in to find she’s standing next to the bed.
"Will you unzip me?"
My knees feel weak, and I shove aside the feeling. I imagine I’ve been pushing myself too hard at practice. That’s the only reason my muscles feel so stiff. Why my arms and legs grow heavy as I reach her. I lower her zipper, millimeter by millimeter. The metallic hissing sound leaches into the space. Goosebumps pop on her skin. I push the dress off her shoulders. It slides down her arms and catches about her hips.
I peel the dress down her curves, past her thighs. It pools around her ankles. She begins to step out of it, but I place my palm on her back. "You don’t move until I tell you to, get me?"
