“Joel—” She was stiff as a board. “Really,I should go. I have to get up early.”
“So?”
A pause. “So, I don’t want to wake you up. It’s late. You’ve been on a bus and—”
“Go to sleep, baby.”
“Joel.”
“Rosie girl.”
Another inhale, but her body didn’t soften.
So, I did—or my tone, anyway. “I’ll be okay,” I told her. “I’ll drive you back to the trailer in the morning, but I want you to be comfortable, baby. And this bed and my arms are better than that damned couch.”
A beat. “The couch is fine.”
“Thecouchis shit.”
She pushed at my chest. “I should—”
“Youshould stop talking,” I muttered, “close your eyes, and go the fuck to sleep.”
“But—”
“Okay, harpy,” I muttered, irritation beginning to burn low in my belly as I flipped us, rolling on top of her and pressing her back into the mattress. “E-fucking-nough.” I cupped her cheek, forced her to look at me. “I want you here. I need to know that you’re sleeping in a safe place. A comfortable place. I need to know that you’re okay.”
She bit her bottom lip again, teeth bright white against the pale pink.

Her mouth. Her nipples. Her cunt.

Fuck.
Not the time. It was late. We were both tired. I needed her to be safe and we both needed to get some rest.
God knew she didn’t get enough of it.
So, I only gave into the urge to nip her bottom lip.
A sigh, but I saw the acquiescence in her eyes.
“You’ll stay?”
She exhaled again, those blue irises glimmering with some emotion I couldn’t read. “Yeah.”
I kissed her cheek, her nose, her mouth. “Thank you, baby.”
A long blip of quiet. “Of course.” Then she pushed lightly at my chest, rolling me off her. I would have protested, except she curled right up to my side, pressed her lips to my jaw. “Sleep now, honey.”
I wrapped my arms around her, one hand buried in her curls, the other on that ass. “Okay, sweetheart.”
I closed my eyes, and exhaustion flooding through me, I let sleep come.
What I didn’t know—not until the morning—was that Billie Rose waited until I was asleep.
