I held her eyes. “Be prepared that I’m not going to stand by and allow that to happen again.”

“Um…” She bit her lip again. “What?”

Stroking a hand up and down her arm. “I’ve got your back, and I’m not going to allow you to stand there and be a punching bag.”

“Okay,” she murmured, disbelief firmly in each of those four letters

Just like everything else, it would take time for her to come around, for her to believe, for her to understand where I was coming from. But I wasn’t going to stop. “And I’ve got your back in more than just that, baby.”

“Okay,” she whispered again.

I tabled my frustration.

Time. It would take time. But even as I was thinking that, my cell rang. I moved to silence it, but Billie shook her head, nodding at my pocket. “Answer it. I need to grab my blanket from inside anyway.”

I waggled my brows. “How about I cuddle you instead?”

“I didn’t think that first dates ended with cuddling,” she teased. “Especially since cuddling is likely to lead to fucking.” She lifted her brows, giving me that sexy, confident Billie Rose smile that had me waking up hard every single morning. A mask in a way. Completely Billie Rose in another.

More layers.

More puzzle pieces of this woman. Ofmywoman.

“I can control myself.”

A snort—one that was completely warranted—before she hopped to her feet and tugged at the flat black handle on the door, letting herself into the trailer.

I watched her ass for a moment too long before my phone buzzed again, and I remembered I was supposed to be answering the call. I tugged my cell from my pocket, answered, “Hello?”

“How’s my baby boy?”

My lips immediately turned up into a smile.

The door creaked open behind me, Billie Rose pushing out with a blue Rush fleece blanket gathered in her arms.

“Hey, Mom.”

My woman’s expression went concerned on the heels of my greeting and she grabbed at the handle, like she was going to escape back inside.

Yeah, no.

I snagged her hand, tugged her down into my lap, and hit speaker phone, just as my mom said, “You didn’t answer my question—how’s my baby boy?”

Billie went very still in my lap.

“I’m good, Mom. I’m actually on a date with a wonderful woman.”

Billie choked.

Stunned silence then, “You picked upyour phonewhile on a date with awonderful woman?”

I chuckled. “Yup. Her name is Billie Rose. She’s smart and capable and beautiful and she’s sitting in my lap staring at me like I’ve grown horns.”

“Lost your brain is more like it,” my mom muttered. “Or heart.”

Billie’s eyes went wide.

Fishing. My mom was fishing. But I didn’t make her work for it. Just chuckled again, spread the blanket over my Rosie’s lap, and laid it out for them both. “Pretty much.”
