Her throat worked, mouth pressing together for a moment before she whispered, “But you looked horrified.”

I frowned. “What are you talking about, sweetheart?”

She bit her bottom lip, released it. Then shook her head. “It doesn’t matter.”

Right. I wasn’t falling for that shit.

I cupped her jaw, tilted her head up. “It matters.”

“I—”

“Itmatters.”

“Forget me,” she said. “I’m just tired and emotional and—” A sharp shake of her head. “Forget me.”

I laughed. “Right. Like that’s ever going to happen.”

Silence. Then, “But you did.”

Said so quietly I almost didn’t hear it.

But Ididhear it.

“What?”

A breath, her voice marginally louder. “You forgot me.”

What the fuck?

Because…what the fuck?

This woman had been on my mind foryears.

Then, since that was really the only natural response, I repeated it out loud, “What the fuck?”

“That first time we were together,” she whispered. “I thought you were awake. Thought you’d remember it was me you were with.” A shaking breath. “But you didn’t.” Another. “You gave me an orgasm that shook me to my core, and then you looked up at me with shock and disgust on your face.”

Fuck.

Fuck.

“Baby—”

“It’s okay,” she said softly. “I’ve gotten that before. A lot of times, actually.” A shrug. “I get it. I’m a woman who men don’t like that way—”

“Bullshit.”

She kept talking. “I’m a lot to handle and we’re in a good place now and I don’t want to go backward and mess this up. Just ignore me—”

I gripped her shoulders when she would have turned away, started back for the bar, seeing this for what it was.

Another shield.

Another wall between us.

Another layer to peel back.

I cupped her cheek. “When are you going to see?”
