And actions.

Andtime.

So, I held her close, and I told her again, “We have time.”

And she held me back.

And…she proved she knew me too.

Because long moments later, she shifted back, fingers gazing my beard as she stared into my eyes, “But you’re also going to keep showing me too, aren’t you?”

I grinned, pressed my mouth to hers.

And figured that was answer enough.

Forty

Billie Rose

We were at the trailer.

It was weeks after Joel had made that promise to prove his feelings to me.

And…he was.

He was thoughtful and kind andJoel. And we were us. And…that never seemed to change.

No matter how cranky I was or how many hours I worked or how many boxes of washi tape he discovered in my office.

He didn’t care if people needed my time.

He’d survived another dinner with my parents (and so had I, especially since my dad had been well behaved for the most part).

He did his job. I did mine.

We went on dates. We fucked and slept together afterward.

We were progressing.

We were boyfriend and girlfriend…and it was good.Reallygood.

Now—today—Joel’s game was starting in just over an hour and we’d been holed up in my office for a while now.

Mostly because when I’d been getting ready to meet him at the rink, to catch up and grab some food before he had to play that evening, my assistant had popped her head into my office and requested I review a few contracts and sign off on some documents before I left. Which meant my workday hadn’t been over. Instead, I’d needed to sit down at my computer and focus. Luckily, I was learned that Joel was flexible and patient. He’d come over and chilled in my space, relaxing on the couch until he needed to walk back across the lot to play some hockey.

I’d gotten Greek food delivered. We’d eaten on my lumpy couch.

It wasn’t quite the same as an actual date.

But it was good—the foodandthe time together.

Because it was us, and Joel didn’t seem to care that I was working while he hung out.

Then again, he never did. He was never annoyed or frustrated or put out or mean. I didn’t need to walk on eggshells or pretend to be someone else to make him happy.

I could be me.

And he was just…Joel.
