Ifthat was even possible.

Because I had the sneaking suspicion it wouldneverreturn to normal. Not completely, anyway.

A narrow-eyed glare. “Don’t love the sarcasm, harpy.”

Slice.

I took another swig of beer, choked it down without gagging, and dropped the bottle to my thigh. Then I pointed out the obvious. “If you don’t love it, then you don’t have to sit here and listen to me.”

Silence.

For long enough that I turned and looked at him.

He was staring at me.

Watchingme.

“Right,” he muttered.

And that was all he said before he stood up and walked away.

Slice.

Five

Joel

Iwas in bed, in the apartment the team had arranged for me, knowing I was lucky as hell to have an actual bed and not a cot in the gymnasium.

I’d tried to refuse, wanting to give it to someone else who might need it more.

But that had just ended up creating more chaos, more stress.

For the team, for the people organizing accommodations.

So, I’d shut the fuck up, let them do their job, and moved into the apartment.

I had nothing. I’d lost every piece of clothing, my expensive suits, the new couch and TV I’d just bought. All the furniture that had cost a fucking fortune since I’d only recently moved into my house.

A forever place because I’d accepted that I wasn’t ever going to be an NHLer. My place was in the minors.

I might pop up for a game or two, but I wasn’t a lifer.

I wouldn’t make my career in the big leagues.

And I’d decided to finally accept that. I’d decided that I liked River’s Bend and that was where I wanted to put down my roots.

Which was why I’d finally bought my place.

Myplace.

It was gorgeous.

Big. Spacious. With plenty of rooms for my crazy ass family.

And…all of it was gone now.

Sighing, I shoved that line of thinking away.
