Not a surprise.

But her cell—screen open to my message—was.

One, how she could function without a cell that automatically locked its screen and didn’t butt dial constantly was unbelievable.

Two, that she was looking at my message.

Not just swiping up and ignoring it.

But reading it in the middle of the night.

Yeah, I liked that.

Except…leaving her safe space in the middle of the night.ThatI didn’t like. Especially if she’d left to go and process the fact that I was texting her and maybe that she didn’t know how to feel about it. Doing that somewhere out there, in the dark, in the middle of the night.

Ididn’tlike that.

So much that I immediately spun on my heel and stormed out of the trailer.

I was going to find her, and I was going to tan her ass—

Okay, I’d make it clear exactly how dumb it was to be wandering alone in the dark, and then, if she was up to it, I’d see about the spanking.

I needed to see that lush ass of hers reddened from my palm.

Right.

Priorities.

Finding her and making sure she was safe.

So, I set about that.

I looked.

But I didn’t find her.

Not in her little SUV.

Not in the open space behind the trailer.

Not backinthe trailer, both of us somehow missing each other.

And now it was really late, and I still hadn’t come across Billie Rose. And the urge to turn that ass red had grown.

But I’d come to peace with the fact that I wasn’t going to find her.

So, I’d tabled the red ass and wanting to find her and kiss her senseless and coax her into telling me what her reply to my text would be.

I’d have to do that tomorrow.

Sighing, I headed back to my car, but then I remembered the box I’d left in my stall. The one I’d meant to leave at the trailer before the road trip or to slip into Billie Rose’s purse when she wasn’t looking at the escape room.

The problem was that Billie Rose never looked away.

She was always taking everything in—and she put a fair amount of effort into keeping her distance from me.

Until she didn’t.
