We only take a few steps into the foyer when I hear female voices.

“Dario, I’m so over Adelina’s shit.”

“I’m allowed to dance wherever I want to,” another voice says.

I look at Dario questioningly.

“My sisters,” he explains.

As if on cue, two women enter the foyer and stop short once they see me. Identical twins. They both have Dario’s dark hair, but their eyes are a lighter brown. They’re tanner than me, but I’m guessing it’s because they have access to the outside. I’m only so pale because I haven’t been in the sun for ten years. They’re very pretty, in an effortless kind of way.

The only difference between them is one has a beauty mark near her left eye, and the other doesn’t. The one with the beauty mark looks annoyed, and she has a fierceness that the other doesn’t. Also, their clothes are a dead giveaway of their different personalities. The one with the beauty mark is wearing a black, form-fitting short dress that shows off her curves in a way that could be borderline inappropriate. The other one is wearing a softer, looser-fitting dress in pink and white.

“Who’s this?” the beauty mark twin asks, looking me over as she smirks. “When do you ever bring home your whores, Dario? You know we don’t appreciate it.”

I flinch back. I’m not a whore.

Dario places a hand on my back. “Sisters, this is Pia. Mywife.”

Both of their eyes widen simultaneously. Maybe it’s some sort of twin connection.

“Oh,” the quieter one says while the beauty mark twin remarks snidely, “So she’s not a whore, then?”

I flinch again. I really wished she’d stop calling me that.

“Sorry,” she says, though her tone implies she’s not really sorry.

“Pia, this is Adelina.” He points to the quieter one. “And my other lovely sister is Serafina. She has a mouth on her.”

Serafina, the one with the beauty mark, makes a face. “Hey, it's just the way I am. Take it or leave it.”

“My sister is sorry for calling you a … you know,” Adelina says, blushing. “She can be very blunt sometimes.”

Serafina huffs and places her hands on her hips. “I just say what I see. I assumed you were a whore. Dario only ever brings back whores to our house, and we always tell him to stop.”

Dario grumbles. “I brought a woman here once, and Serafina won’t let me live it down.” He shoots me an apologetic expression. “And she was not a whore, by the way. We were dating at the time.”

“Yeah, and you dropped her so fast when you got bored of her, so Adelina and I just assumed she was a whore.”

My head whips to the side as I look at him. Girlfriend? I hope that relationship is over, considering our recent marriage. But it begs the question—will Dario continue to see other women? Do I care if he does? I want my freedom, not a husband. I shouldn’t care if he sees another woman … yet the thought of him dating someone else makes me uncomfortable. Will he get bored of me like he got bored of his girlfriend?

“I did not,” Adelina cuts in. “I would never think of someone that way.” As she speaks, Serafina rolls her eyes. I’m getting the sense they don’t exactly get along.

“Sure. My goody-two-shoes sister, everyone.”

Adelina shakes her head before looking at me more closely. “So, you two are really married?”

“Yes.” Dario presses his hand more firmly on my back.

Serafina waves a hand in our direction. “How did this happen? You told us you had business to deal with, and now, you’ve returned with a wife?”

So Dario didn’t even tell his sisters his plan. He says he wants me to feel welcome here, but that’s the last thing I feel at this moment.

“I’ve been planning this for a while now,” he explains. “I didn’t tell you two because you didn’t need to know. Now, you know. Pia is my wife = and will be living with us. Show her some respect and be nice.” That last bit seems directed at Serafina.

Serafina rolls her eyes. “I’m always nice.”

Adelina scoffs. “Ok.”
