“I’ve got you,” he says quietly against my ear. “I’ve got you.”

I turn my head slightly, and our lips brush in a small kiss. His hands tighten on my waist. On instinct, I place my legs around his waist. We’ve never been closer. In my bathing suit and his bare chest, even our skin is touching. It’s intoxicating.

“See? I told you you’d be fine.”

I tilt my chin forward, and that’s one signal Dario understands. He kisses me hotly as he presses me against the pool wall. I feel like I’ll never get enough of him. I can’t imagine how.

Dario groans against my mouth as he presses his body harder against mine. I can feel the ridges of his chest, the warmth of his skin, and the coolness of the pool water. The mixture is potent.

I gasp as he kisses my neck, and my head drops back, aching for more. Dario lifts his hand and cups my breast. And just like this morning, it feels so good. I shift my hips against him, aching for more even though I’m not sure I’m fully ready for more.

Dario responds in kind, and soon, our hips are moving in a circular motion, our bodies brushing against each other. Even though we have clothes on, it feels like nothing is there.

I gasp as he presses his body closer to mine. I never want this to end.

But the sound of a voice saying, “Seriously?” makes us pull apart. We turn to see Serafina and Adelina standing in the doorway, wearing bathing suits and towels over their arms. It was Serafina who spoke. “If I knew you two would be dry humping in the pool. I’d have made different plants for the day.”

Dario keeps holding me, but he creates a little distance between us. “I didn’t know you two were coming out here. Pia and I were just enjoying our time together, you know, since we’re married.”

“Ugh.” Serafina rolls her eyes. “You need to hold onto her and everything?”

“Pia can’t swim.”

“Of course, she can’t.”

Serafina’s words make me flinch. She has that effect on me.

“I think it’s sweet,” Adelina says, setting her towel down on one of the chairs on the patio. “You two are cute together.”

“Yeah, so sweet. Sweet enough to make my teeth rot.”

“Serafina,” Dario says, sighing. “Stop with the fucking attitude.”

“Why?” She places her hands on her hips. “You’re not my father. Father’s been dead for years now.”

“And you’ve become an utter bitch since then,” he snaps back. “Now, I’m going to teach my wife to swim. You can either join us or go do something else.”

Adelina slips into the pool. “Come on. Serafina. Let’s have some fun.”

She grumbles. “Fine.” She tosses her towel onto the ground, where it lands in a lump. Then, with a toss of her hair, she runs forward and jumps into the pool, spilling water everywhere.

I snuggle in closer to Dario, my arms and legs still wrapped around him. I’m not letting go for anything.

While Serafina and Adelina swim around on one end of the pool, Dario begins to teach me how to float on my own.

“Lay on your back. I got you.” He tries to extract my arms from him, but I cling on tighter. “Pia.” He chuckles. “You’re safe. I won’t let you drown. You think I’d go to all this effort to make you my wife and then let you die? Never.” My mom died in my father’s bloody arms. The image won’t leave me no matter how hard I try. “It’s ok.” He moves my arms from around his neck. “There you go.” Then he removes my legs from around his waist and helps me lay back in the water, his hands under me. “Just like that.”

I let out small gasps as I stare up at the sky. It’s been years since I’ve properly seen the sky light up with the sun and clouds. It’s beautiful. It also brings back all my fears about being locked up in my tower with my lonely, little window with a view of the olive trees.

“I got you,” Dario keeps repeating, his voice soothing. His hands feel good on my back—a safety net. “Just take this in. Feel what you’re feeling.”

I open my lips to cry out, but like usual, no sound comes out. In my sudden panic, my body falls into the water. I inhale water, and it burns. Now, I really feel like I’m dying.

But then Dario’s arms are around me, and he picks me up, cradling me in his arms. “I got you, Pia. I got you.” I burrow my face into his neck and begin to cry.

“She can’t even swim,” Serafina’s voice carries over the water. “How pathetic.”

“Serafina!” Dario snaps.
