When I tap her shoulder, she jumps. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”

She clasps her hand to her chest and shakes her head, signing,Don’t worry.

I’m starting to understand her language more and more. The barrier between us is lessening.

“Pia, there’s something I need to discuss with you.” No point wasting time. She raises one eyebrow questioningly. “It’s about … your father and his house.”

She flinches and shakes her head again, turning away from me.

“Hey.” I gently turn her back to me. “I got you, remember. It’s only a question. Ok?”

She inhales deeply before shakily letting it out. Once she nods, I know she’s feeling better.

“Do you know of any secret way into your father’s house?”

She frowns, pulls her phone out of her pocket, and types,Why?

“Because I’m going to attack him tomorrow, and I wondered if there were any ways to get into his house without him knowing.”

Pia stares at me with a hard expression. Then she begins to type furiously, her fingers flying. Once she’s done, she practically shoves the phone at me.Why are you attacking him? Why don’t we just stay here together? I don’t want you to get hurt.

“I’m not going to get hurt. I need to end things with Tommaso for good. I can’t risk him finding you and taking you back. I’m only trying to protect you.”

She rips the phone away from me and types,Why now? Why didn’t you kill him the day you took me?

“Because, at the time, I wanted him to know I was the one who hurt him. But now, things have changed. I care about you, Pia. Believe that.”

I do, she signs.

“I don’t want him getting his hands on you again. Which is why I have to kill him. End this for good. So, that’s why I need to know if you know anything that could help me?” I rest my hands on her arms. “Please. That’s all I’m asking.”

She makes a face before she types, I don’t know much. I was locked in my tower for most of my life.

“Try for me.”

She sighs and types,I do remember a secret door from the garden into the house, but you’d have to go in through the back. It would probably just be easier to go in through the front of the house. That’s all I remember.

“Thank you. Any information is useful information.”

She grabs my hand before I leave and shows me the phone screen where she has written,Just promise me that you’ll be safe.

I bend down and kiss her. Pia clings to the front of my shirt like she’s holding on for dear life. “I’ll be safe,” I say once I’ve pulled back. “I promise.” I never break a promise.

The next day,I leave with my men to kill Tommaso Vitale. Getting into his house the first time was easy. With the wedding and guests coming and going, I was able to slip in undetected. Now, Tommaso will be prepared.

The plan is to attack fast and hard so that Tommaso won’t be able to respond quickly. He has the advantage of being on home turf, but I have the advantage of surprise.

I skid to a halt in front of his mansion as Matteo and some of his men park around me. As a group, we get out of our cars and approach the house. Matteo and his men attack the front of the house while a few other men and I run around the side of the mansion to reach the secret door Pia mentioned.

I hear shouts and gunshots from the front as I move through the back garden. Hopefully, Matteo doesn’t lose too many men. He won’t be happy with me.

Two guards are manning the backyard as I round the corner. My men and I shoot them before they have a chance to respond. I walk past their dead bodies and motion for my men to follow me. I search for the back door and only find it once I push aside some ivy on the wall. It’s hidden in the stone and could be so easily overlooked if one wasn’t deliberately looking for it.

It’s locked, but that doesn’t stop me. I shoot the handle, and the door swings wide open with an eerie creak. With my men behind me, we rush inside.

Another guard runs at us, but I shoot him dead before he reaches us. His body falls with a slump to the ground, and I growl as I step over him. Where the fuck is Tommaso?
