And he’s coming right toward me.

“Pia, run!” Dario shouts, pulling me to stand and pushing me toward the stairs.

Three other men get out of the car behind my father and descend on Dario, grabbing him and forcing him to his knees. They each take turns punching him in the face and stomach. It doesn’t take long for blood to cover his handsome face.

“Pia!” he shouts again. “Please.”

“Don’t kill him,” I beg my father as I run up to him, hitting him with my fists.

He laughs—a sickly sound. “Oh, so youcantalk, can you?” He pushes me to the floor. I wince as I land on more glass shards. “And here I thought you were being sincere in your muteness. All this time you were pretending. I should’ve known. You were always a little liar, my dear daughter.”

I scream as he picks me up and throws me back onto the ground. A searing pain runs up my arm. I glance down and see a large piece of glass sticking out of my arm. Blood begins to seep around the wound.

“Leave her alone, you fucking bastard,” Dario snarls as he jerks against the hold of my father’s men. He’s bleeding everywhere now. His face, his shoulder from his gunshot, and even his mouth. It’s a terrifying sight, seeing the man you love looking so beaten and broken.

“As if you care,” my father taunts. “You only took my daughter to hurt me. You want my territory. Well, I guess now you’ll never get your hands on it.”

Dario bucks against his captors, but he isn’t stronger than the three men combined. He meets my eyes, begging me to run.

Using as much strength as I have left, I press myself up and run up the stairs.

“You’re not going to get far, little lady,” my father’s voice follows me.

Breathing hard, I push up the stairs until I reach the master bedroom, where Adelina and Serafina are still inside. I slam the door shut and point at the dresser on the ground. “Help me with that.”

They both pause.

“You can talk,” Serafina says.

“Yes. Nowhelpme.”

Serafina blinks, then stands up and helps me push the dresser back in front of the door. “What’s going on? We heard an even louder crash.”

“And gunshots,” Adelina adds. “We were worried that you or Dario was dead.”

“We’re alive,” I tell them. It’s so strange. I haven’t spoken in years, and now, it feels like I haven’t missed any days. I guess it’s like riding a bike. “But my father showed up, and he has Dario.”

Serafina’s eyes land on my arm. “That doesn’t look good. You could bleed out.”

I look down at my arm with the large glass shard in it. “You’re right.” All of a sudden, I feel faint. I collapse to the ground.

“Shit,” Serafina curses as she bends down to look at me. Adelina presses lifts herself onto her elbows on the bed, concern written all over her face. “Pia, we have to get that out of you. If we don’t, you could bleed out and die.”

“Do you know how to stitch up a wound?” Adelina asks her sister.

“No, but I guess I’ll have to figure it out. I watched Dario take care of your foot. It’s not rocket science. I can do the same.” Serafina turns to me. “I got you, Pia. Ok?”

I smile. “You sound like your brother when you say that.”

She grimaces. “I’m not sure that’s a compliment.”

I grab her hand. “It is.”

We share a second to look at each other, and Serafina offers me a smile. “Ok. Let’s get you fixed up.” She grabs the first aid kit from the bed and douses her hands in alcohol. Then she grabs the glass shard from my arm. “This is going to hurt.”

“Just do it,” I grit out.

Serafina slowly pulls it from my arm, and the pain is nothing I’ve ever felt before. I cry out. She winces. “Sorry.”
