“Thanks. And my sisters? They’re all right?”

“They’re just fine. Though maybe tell Serafina to back off on the flirting.”

“Duly noted.”

“Though I wouldn’t mind if Adelina tried to flirt more herself.”

“You have a thing for my sister?”

He shrugs. “What can I say? I have a thing for the innocent type.”

“You and Adelina, huh?”

He smiles wide. “Hey, a man can dream, can’t he?”

I don’t respond to that. “Finish cleaning up this mess. I’m going to find Pia, and I’m taking Tommaso with me, so he doesn’t get the chance to escape.”

I bend down and slap Tommaso across the face until he wakes up. “Doesn’t feel so good, does it? To lose?”

He frowns. “I’m going to kill you.”

“We’ll see about that.” I haul him up and wrap his hands behind him, keeping them in my grip. “Now, walk.” I shove him forward. “Where’s the entrance to Pia’s tower?”

“Like I would ever tell you.”

“Fine, then. We’ll just have to keep walking until we find it.” I twist his wrist hard in my hand. He winces. “Or I could break your wrist. Your choice.”

“Why does it matter what you do to me? You’re going to kill me anyway.”

“Not quite.” An idea is forming in my mind. “You might want to be on your best behavior, so I don’t hurt you too badly. You’re going to regret it if you do.”

“You’re not going to kill me?” His incredulity amuses me. “That’s a mistake you’re going to regret, Dario.”

“We’ll see about that.”

I shove Tommaso every chance I get as we make our way through his house. It becomes obvious when we reach the tower door. Just the shape of it gives it away.

I try the door. It’s locked.

“Open it,” I tell him.

He doesn’t move.

“I said, open it.” I push him towards the door. Still, he doesn’t do what I demand. “You must have a key on you.” I dig through his pockets but come up empty. “If you don’t open this door now, I’m going to use your face to open it.”

He huffs. “I’m not opening this door for anything. My daughter is going to die in there as she deserves.”

“Your choice, then.” I grab Tommaso’s shoulders and slam him into the door. He groans. Then I slam his face into the doorknob repeatedly until it cracks open. I’m amazed he’s still alive from how I’ve treated him. “See? Easy.” I open the door and shove him inside, following right after.

And there she is. Pia.

She sits up on her bed once she sees me. “Dario?” Her eyes land on her father, who’s slumped on the floor. “Father?”

I rush to her side. “Are you all right?” I cup her cheek, checking for any injuries. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine.” She places her hand over mine. “I’m fine. I’m injured, but I’ll be fine.” Then she signs,I love you.

I sign it back.I love you, too.
