Cassio

Ican’t believe I’m going through with this.

Sure, I have to honor my promise.

Getting Camilla the job was a big deal, after all. Maybe the same thing could be said for the old man if he sells enough products to get the wheels turning so that our repo team can churn out even more money.

He’s got an incentive to stay employed, should I offer it to him.

His daughter is my little girl.I’mher daddy now, not him.

And yet, I feel the same way as I try to get off the highway as I did the first day, this time with his daughter in the passenger's seat of my car.

“He’s going to be so excited to hear what you’re going to tell him!” she chimes, incredibly happy that I’m giving up what I offered him and had ultimately collected on. We knew damn well that the guy didn’t have any money, yet somehow, I ended up with his daughter. Crazy how the business goes sometimes.

To be fair, the only reason I resorted to such actions was Camilla. If it was anyone else, I wouldn’t have bothered. Like I said, the moment I saw her, I just knew she’d be mine.

“Sure hope so,” I grumble, not exactly pleased that I won’t be able to go after him further, but I’m a man of my word, and I’ll be damned if I won’t follow through with what I told her the night before. Not making the same mistake as before, I peel off into the breakdown lane, watching a few people honk their horns, pissed off as I make my way down the exit ramp and pull into the driveway of the still incredibly decrepit house.

One of the glass windows on the front of the house had broken since I was last here, looking as if something was thrown through it.

“Oh, that wasn’t,” Camilla mutters, noticing a few different things that I did not have the eye for. She gets out of the car, running inside as I take slow strides towards the door. She must have been worried about her old man, considering the state that the house is in.

“Camilla, they’re foreclosing the house and going to demolish the whole thing,” Hammond shouts, his eyes only falling on me the moment I walk through the front door. His entire demeanor changes when he sees me. “Oh. Mr. Cardozzo. I knew my daughter had not traveled on her own. I figured as much.”

“Yeah, yeah, not thrilled to see you either,” I say under my breath, looking up to see Camilla’s glare. “Just got to run through some stuff now. Figure this shit and then you’ll get your whole… situation changed.”

“You’re not welcomein this house.”

“I will be if you let me fuckin’ tell you what I’m tryna say.”

“You took my daughter away from me! What right do you have to tell me what’s going on in my life?!”

“Your daughter and I are getting married and that whole deal with your car is off! I’m moving you into a property that I own, and we’re going to get your deadbeat ass a job at my place. How about that for trying to get your shit together?!”

Silence.

Hammond looks shocked at what I just told him, barely able to wrap his head around what he just heard. Camilla, too, apparently is only focusing on the single slip I’ve made, the slight weight in my back pocket being a constant reminder of what I’m planning to do today, right after we finish this whole deal.

Guessthe cat’s out of the bag now. Pinching the bridge of my nose, my gaze flicks back to the father and daughter before me.

“You… you forgave everything? And you’re moving me somewhere?” Hammond questions, still trying to figure out exactly what I said. I can’t blame him if he thinks it highly suspicious. I’m not exactly the poster boy for generosity.

“You’re not,” Camilla stammers in disbelief, barely able to contain herself as her hands dart to her face, just as I get down on one knee, going through the whole ritual without much to say. Hammond doesn’t react as well as I would have liked, but even so…

“Camilla Dailey, will you marry me?”

Her eyes widen, lips parting in surprise and glee. “Yes, yes, oh my god yes!”

She launches herself to me, Hammond apparently celebrating in his own way, likely on some kind of drug that numbs whatever emotional response he’s feeling at the time, still trying to process everything. My little girl celebrates as I slide the massive diamond ring onto her finger. It fits her perfectly.

“You’re genuinely doing all that… for me?” Hammond scowls, still in disbelief. “You’re… actually doing all of that?”

“Hammond, Jesus Christ, just get your shit together, man.” I try to make the best of the moment, but her drugged-out father dampens the whole atmosphere. I haven’t paid attention before, but Camilla’s crying at the sight of the ring and visibly upset by her father’s reaction.

She’s starting a new family with her new daddy.
