I’d planned not to drink so much and figured I’d drive back to San Jose last night, but that plan went to shit once I saw Lee. Bryce had insisted I stay and listed all these things we could do during a sleepover. Needless to say, the alcohol changed those plans too.

“Of course. Now we can go out for brunch and have some mimosas.” She grins and wiggles.

I chuckle, undoing the messy bun at the top of my head and redoing it.

“Now…” She leans forward and sets her iPad on the coffee table. “Do you want to tell me now or later?” She crosses her legs and rests her elbows on her knees and her head in her hands.

“What?” I ask. Did I do something really embarrassing last night?

“Are you going to tell me what the deal is between you and Lee Burrows?”

I try to school my face, but her smirk makes it clear I’m not successful. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She scoffs. “Please, after you went to the bathroom, Lee followed and I had to search you out on the dance floor. And there you stayed until it was time to go.”

I cover my face with the blanket.

“Oh, this must be good.”

I peek from under the blanket and she’s rubbing her hands together like an evil sorceress.

I let my head fall forward and meet her gaze. “Is this Bryce the reporter asking or Bryce the friend?”

Her expression turns serious and she straightens her back. “Friend. You have my word that nothing personal you ever tell me will make it into one of my stories. I’d never do that to my new best friend.”

We’ve only just met, but something about Bryce tells me I can trust her. But… I’ve been wrong about people before. Lee is the perfect example. Still, it would be nice to have a girlfriend to confide in. Especially because this situation between Lee and me is not going away.

Truthfully, if it ever got out, Lee is the one who would look like the asshole, not me.

So I go into the entire story of what happened between us in college—how I had to tutor him in biology and that I’d always had a crush on him even though we’d never spoken until that point. How he made a move on me, and the relationship I thought was evolving over the weeks. How he made me think that us sleeping together would be the beginning of something amazing, only for me to find out he’d made a thousand-dollar bet with his teammate about scoring with me.

Her mouth hangs open. “What a pig!”

“Right? And he wonders why I won’t just up and forgive him.”

She leans back in her chair and pulls her legs up to her chest. “You’re a better woman than I am. I would’ve strung him up by his balls.”

I laugh. “If we’d known each other in college, I would’ve let you.”

“Well, we’re best friends now and I promise that any guy who does you dirty will have to answer to me from this point forward.”

“Ditto. Now, it’s your turn. Are you going to tell me what’s going on with you and Brady?” I waggle my eyebrows.

She waves me off. “I thought I might be interested in him for a hot second.”

I chuckle. “Sure. What’s not to like… he’s successful, a professional athlete, totally hot, killer body…”

She arches an eyebrow. “I could say the same about Lee.”

Heat rises to my cheeks. “Touché.”

We’re quiet for a moment, each of us deep in our thoughts.

“So what made you change your mind about him?” I ask.

“I think he’s more into getting into my pussy than actually developing a relationship. I’ve been there and done that. I’m not big on one-night stands anymore.”

I nod since I’ve never been big into one-night stands. But then again, I rarely go to places where I could pick men up like that anyway.
