Fuck. Maybe it’s time I got laid. It’s been a while—since before Shayna joined the team. Maybe that’s my issue. I’m just horny in general and need to get off with a woman rather than my hand and memories of a woman I can’t have. But if that’s the case, how come none of the women I’ve come into contact with over the past couple of months have done anything for me?

As I’m about to leave the locker room, my cell rings and my brother’s name flashes on the screen.

“Hey, Kane. What’s up?”

“Great game you had today.”

“You watched?” I wave goodbye to a couple of the guys leaving the locker room.

“I always watch, you know that.”

I chuckle. “True, but you’re a newlywed. I’m surprised you came up for air long enough to see the game.”

“I didn’t say I saw every second of it.” The amusement in his voice is good to hear. There were times I worried he’d live his life alone and lonely with his dog.

“Spare me the details.”

“Seriously, though. You looked good out there. I have a good feeling about this season for you.”

Jana, his bride, says good game in the background.

“How do you feel about your own season?” I ask.

My brother is a retired professional hockey player, but now he coaches the Florida Fury hockey team, while his new wife is the team’s owner.

“You worry about football, and I’ll handle hockey.”

Once my dad died and my mom fell into her depression, then went in and out of mental health facilities every time she became suicidal, Kane raised me. He didn’t take a scholarship down in the States, but stayed up by us in British Columbia to get me through high school. So although he doesn’t have to worry about me anymore, it’s ingrained in him.

“Fair enough.” I head toward the locker room exit so that I can get on the bus back to the hotel.

Kane’s quiet for a moment, and I hear Jana whispering.

“If she’s blowing you and you’re talking…”

“Fuck off,” he says. “Um… I also wanted to call and check in on that other situation.”

I don’t need to ask him to clarify. He’s asking about Shayna.

“It’s better. Not exceptional, but better than it was.” I stop short when I spot Shayna at the end of the hall. She almost looks as if she’s waiting for me.

“Glad to hear it,” Kane says. “I thought maybe her presence would be a distraction, but your game tonight didn’t show that at all.”

I stop walking and stand in front of Shayna.

Seeing that I’m on the phone, she whispers, “Can I talk to you for a second?”

Nodding, I say into the receiver, “What was it you just told me? I’ll worry about football, and you worry about hockey?”

“Touché,” he says with a laugh.

“Listen, I gotta run. I’ll call you later?”

“Yep. I just wanted to touch base. Call whenever you can.”

“Will do.” I hang up and shove the phone in my pocket. “Sorry, my brother.”

She nods. “He plays professional hockey, right?”
