“Not at the moment. Maybe later.” His smile is so sweet and innocent that a chuckle slips from my mouth.

“Yes, I’m sure you’ll think of something—later.” I hope he’ll get the hint and back off.

“Hey, you two.” Miles saunters over, helmet in hand, a sweaty mess just like Lee. He leans in close, causing Lee and me to step closer to hear him. “Listen, I don’t really know and I don’t really care what’s going on between you two, other than I’m your best friend.” He looks at Lee. “And I haven’t betrayed either of you about what happened in the past. That should prove I can be trusted, but whatever,” He rolls his eyes. “But people are asking questions about the way you two look at each other. A couple of the guys asked me if you’re fucking.”

All the air rushes out of my lungs.

Lee is nonplussed. “Fuck whatever anyone else thinks. There’s nothing going on.”

Miles’s eyebrows shoot up. “Yeah well, the press is here, and if they go digging around, it’s not gonna take much for them to dig something up. And the more defensive you are”—he sets his gaze on Lee because he definitely gave something away with that reaction—“the further they’re going to dig.” He looks between the two of us, then glances in Bryce’s direction on the field and scowls before looking back to me. “I get that she’s your friend, but you can’t trust her.”

“Lee and I are just friends.” My lame excuse comes out halfhearted. Even I hear the lie coming from my lips.

Miles chuckles. “You forget that I was around in college when you guys were eye-fucking each other. Don’t worry about me, I figured it out weeks ago. I’m not gonna say anything, but who knows about anyone else.” He glances back at some of the guys lingering on the field.

I nod and say a quiet thanks before Miles walks away.

“Why do I feel like my father just scolded me?” Lee shakes his head, watching Miles walk back to the guys.

All I think about is I have to get out of his vicinity. “I have to go. We can talk about this later.” I walk away.

“Wait.” Lee jogs to catch up to me.

“Later,” I whisper over my shoulder.

“Burrows!” Thankfully, the quarterback coach calls him over.

Lee groans, having no choice but to stay on the practice field while I go to do my job.

I hate having to sneak around as much as he does. At first it brought a bolt of adrenaline, but now that real feelings are involved, it’s not as much fun. It’s not any fun in fact.

But I need to really think this over before I agree to do anything I can’t take back.

Lee has to understand.

Shayna gives me the cold shoulder for the rest of the day. I guess I should be used to that, but something about it feels different. Something’soff. I really wish Miles had come to me first and not involved Shayna.

She does, however, agree to meet me at her place when I text her from the locker room. That’s something, I suppose. For a moment there, I thought maybe she was going to tell me we needed to put an end to us.

I’m on my way to my vehicle when I spot Miles heading to his Tesla on the other side of the parking lot.

“Hey, Miles, wait up!” I jog over to where he’s waiting for me next to the driver’s side. I glance around to make sure no one is nearby. “What the fuck was that earlier?”

He heaves out a heavy sigh. “I’m just trying to help you two.”

“By accusing us of having an affair with thirty witnesses and putting the fear of God into us?”

He crosses his arms and leans his back against his car. “Are you?”

We have a stare-off for a moment. I consider lying to him, but what’s the point? He already admitted he knows.

“That’s not the point.”

“That’s exactly thepoint.”
