He stands and comes around the desk with his hand out. “Jasper Banks, good to meet you both. Brady has nothing but nice things to say about you both.”

We each shake his hand, then he leads us to a sitting area with a couch and two chairs. Shayna and I sit side by side on the couch and he takes one of the chairs.

“I’m sure you’re wondering why I wanted to meet with you.” He directs his attention to Shayna.

She shifts in her seat. “Um… a little, yes.”

Jasper smiles and it reminds me a lot of Brady. “There will be an announcement tomorrow that my wife and I have purchased the San Francisco Kingsmen football team.”

I’m not sure which of us draws in a deep breath first.

“Oh wow, congratulations,” she says.

He nods, nonplussed as though it’s every day that he purchases a professional football team. “I understand you used to work for the Kingsmen as an athletic trainer.”

She nods. “Yes, I was let go about six months ago.”

Jasper’s lips thin. “Brady filled me in on all that unpleasantness. You should’ve seen my wife’s reaction when she heard. I thought she might jump over the table and strangle old man Hanover.” He chuckles as if picturing it, then looks at us. “Part of a purchase this large is due diligence and finding out anything that might be a liability and come back around to bite you in the ass down the road.”

Shayna stiffens. “I assure you that I didn’t refuse their payoff so that I could come back later and try to sue them.”

He waves her off. “Oh, I know that. My son tells me you’re good people. I’m not here to mitigate damages. You’re here because, from everything I’ve been told, you’re an excellent trainer, and I want to offer you your old position back.”

Her mouth drops open. I can’t help the smile that transforms my face.

“You should know that Dr. Carlisle’s contract will be paid out and he’ll no longer be with the organization. We only like people on our team who are positive and look forward. He’s just not going to work with the culture we want to build at the Kingsmen.”

Thank God. I hate that asshole. I swear he was pissed when I signed my three-year contract with the team at the end of the last season. I’m pretty sure he’s the one who had us investigated in the first place.

“I… I don’t know what to say.”

I take her hand and squeeze it. “Say yes. This is what you want.”

She looks between Jasper and me for a moment. “But the two of us… working together…”

Jasper laughs. “Not a problem. It’s an existing relationship that we’ve known about, but you both will have to sign some paperwork that you’re both in a committed relationship.”

Shayna looks at me, and I nod.

“Yes, I accept. Thank you so much.” Her eyes overfill with happiness, reminding me of the glittering sea we just left behind.

“Wonderful. Happy to have you as part of the team. And Lee…” He turns to face me. “I can’t wait to see what you and Brady pull off on the field this season.”

“Me too, sir.”

He opens his mouth, but the office door bursts open before he gets a word out.

“Dad, I have a problem.” Brady stands in the doorway, his hair disheveled and his clothes wrinkly. Not at all like he usually looks. “Oh shit, sorry. I didn’t know you were in a meeting. Hey guys.” He raises his hand in hello and we follow suit. “Looks like I managed the grand gesture, Burrows. Getting your girl her job back and all.” Brady winks.

I shake my head but let that go for now, since we’re in his parents’ house and his dad is going to be my new boss.

“Go ahead, Lee, kick his ass,” Jasper says. I already know I’m going to enjoy working for this man.

“I’ll be in the kitchen.” Brady goes to shut the door.

Jasper stands. “Everything okay, Brady?”

Brady looks between his dad, Shayna, and me before blowing out a breath. “You guys might as well hear it too.” He steps in and shuts the door. “The new nanny Hannah hired? It’s the woman from that one-night stand who wouldn’t give me her number.”
