“Hey, guys.” My mom walks over and gives Theo and me a hug.

“Aunt Bianca! Uncle Evan!” Theo runs over, and Evan grabs him and flips him upside down.

“Good to see you again, Violet,” Mom says.

“Same, Mrs. Banks.”

“What did I tell you about the Mrs. Banks stuff?” Mom’s eyebrows shoot up.

Violet chuckles. “Sorry, Lennon.”

My mom winks at her. “That’s right. You haven’t met my other two kids yet. Let me introduce you.” She gestures for my brother and sister to come over while my dad gives us a wave from the corner of the room since he’s on a phone call. Evan has Theo hanging upside down by his feet. “This is my son, Evan. Evan, put Theo down.” My mom shakes her head.

Evan pretends to drop Theo but catches him, flips him, and puts him down on his feet. Theo can’t stop laughing.

“And my daughter, Bianca.”

“Nice to meet you,” Bianca says. Her long dark hair is pulled back into a slick bun and she’s wearing a conservative navy dress.

“Hey, Violet.” Evan reaches forward to shake Violet’s hand, and his gaze gives away his interest in her.

I clear my throat when he doesn’t immediately let her hand go.

“Uncle Evan, Aunt Bianca, swing me!”

Evan laughs. “Sure, but let’s move over there where we’ll have some more room.”

At the same time, Bianca frowns. “Not a good idea, buddy.”

He rolls his eyes. “Surprise, killjoy says no.”

Bianca crosses her arms. “Have you considered we’re going to be on national television and if we’re throwing him around like a football, he’s going to be all wrinkled?”

“It’s okay.” Theo pulls at his collar. Getting him to wear dress pants and a button-down shirt this morning took a twenty-minute debate.

“C’mon.” Evan nods to his right. “Let’s do it over here by the couch.”

“It’s like you don’t hear me,” Bianca mutters as she follows him.

“Let’s go, Violet.” Theo reaches for her hand and drags her away.

My mom stands beside me, silent until the four of them are far enough away that they can’t hear us. “She’s cute, honey.”

“Don’t start.”

“I’m just saying.” She looks at me with wide eyes, trying to sell her innocent look, but I know her. Thank God she doesn’t know I’ve slept with Violet or else she’d be relentless.

I shove my hands in my suit pockets. “Well don’t. She works for me.”

She shrugs. “You wouldn’t be the first man to fuck the nanny.”

I press my fingers to the bridge of my nose. “Seriously, Mom?”

“Well, think about it. If it turned into something more than just banging, you already know how she’d be with Theo.”

“It could also be a disaster if things went sour before Hannah returns.” I raise my eyebrows at her.

She moseys over to a table of treats, grabs a carrot, and takes a bite of it. “Ah, so you’ve already considered it.”
