“He’s gonna fuck her,” Chase says matter-of-factly.

“I’m not.” I pick up the weights again.

“The want you had for her doesn’t just disappear, and you haven’t even asked us to go out. It’s off-season, man, and not once have I received a phone call to head to the clubs.” He wipes his face and looks at the others.

“I got Shayna.” Lee holds up his hands.

Miles looks at me with a pained expression when he shakes his head.

“This is my time with Theo,” I argue.

“That never stopped you on the weekends before,” Chase argues. I’m not sure why he wants to fight this out right now.

“Hannah was here,” I say.

“You have live-in help!” Chase holds out his arms. “Admit it, you don’t want any other pussy. You’re happy to sit tight here and watch rom-coms all night.”

“Hey now, some of them are good,” Lee comments. We all glare at him, and he shrugs, going back for another set. “Come on, you guys, I know you watch them.”

Chase shakes his head. I don’t think he has ever watched a rom-com, not even with a girl he really liked. If there ever was one.

“You’re such a pessimist,” Miles says to Chase, stabbing the buttons on the treadmill to slow it to a jog.

“Just a realist. You’ll see.” Chase grins at me as though he knows he’s telling the truth. And I have no fucking rebuttal.

“You ever find out why she wouldn’t give you her number?” Miles asks.

I frown and wipe the sweat off my forehead with my forearm. “No. The conversation was awkward enough.”

“How’s wedding planning going for Twyla?” Lee, always a good guy, changes the line of conversation.

Miles’s little sister got engaged almost a year ago, and although he puts up a good front when she comes into town to visit, he’s made it clear to us he doesn’t like her fiancé.

“Are you trying to ruin my day?” Miles grumbles.

“You’re not the first guy to hate his sister’s fiancé, but what is it with him?” I ask.

He stops the machine and steps off the treadmill, reaching for the towel dangling off the side. “I tried telling her he wasn’t good enough when they first started dating, and it made for a lot of tension between us. She won’t listen to me. If I tell her I don’t like her future husband, it’ll only push her closer to him and further from me.”

“They’ve been together a while, right? Maybe he’s matured,” Lee says.

“I’m telling you, this guy isn’t who he pretends to be. I can feel it. Underneath his happy exterior, there’s something more there. I just can’t figure out what. But I will before she says I do.”

“I get the feeling no one will ever be good enough for your sister in your eyes,” I say, making my way over to the fridge to grab another drink.

“Damn straight. It’d be way easier if she were a lesbian. Then I wouldn’t have to worry about her being with men who let their dicks make decisions for them. Men are pigs. Myself included.”

“What’s up, Chase?” I ask. “You don’t have anything to add to this? You had lots to say about my situation.”

He glares in my direction. “What do you want me to say? It’s not my fucking business.”

“Well, do you think Twyla should marry this guy?” I grab my drink from the fridge and twist off the cap.

“She can do whatever the fuck she wants. It’s a free country.”

Miles groans. “Can we stop talking about this? You guys are stressing me out.”

I shrug, and Lee says, “Yeah, sure.”
