I literally have to bite my bottom lip not to comment.

We chat for a couple more minutes about how the restaurant is doing, then she pushes back from the table and says she’s going to check on our meals.

Once she’s away from the table, Theo looks at me. “Why do we come here? She makes you sad. But don’t worry, I’m gonna make you happy like you help me when I’m sad about my mom.”

This time, a tear does sneak loose, and it is one of sadness, but not for my mother. It’s because I’m going to miss this little guy as much as his father when it’s time for me to say goodbye.

“All right, buddy. That’s it for tonight.” I close the book and kiss the top of his head.

“Just one more?” he whines.

“It’s time for bed.” I use my dad voice so he knows not to bother arguing.

He relents, scooting down from where he was sitting against the headboard so he’s lying down with his head on his pillow. “Daddy, how much longer is Violet going to be here?”

Where is this question coming from? Does he want her to leave?

My forehead wrinkles. “She’s with us for a little less than two more months, buddy.”

“Then what?” he asks.

“Mommy comes home, and Violet goes to help another family.” I hate the way my stomach squeezes painfully at the thought of her absence from our lives.

“Oh.” I can’t tell if he’s happy or sad about that.

“Why do you ask?” I scoot down to lie beside him with my head propped on my hand.

“We saw her mom at the restaurant today and they were talking about it. Her mom makes her sad.” He frowns.

I see how much that upsets him. It upsets me too, truth be told, knowing what she’s told me about her relationship with her parents.

“Sometimes other people think they know what’s best for someone and they get upset if that person doesn’t do it. But I wouldn’t worry about it. Violet will be fine.” I taste the lie on my tongue because it’s clear to me the effect her parents’ feelings about her life have on her, but I’m not going to get into that with my almost six-year-old son. Which is the perfect segue into happier thoughts for my little man. “Are you excited for your birthday party next week?”

He nods excitedly. “It’s gonna be so fun.”

“Can’t wait.” I give him a kiss. “Hard to believe you’re going to be six already.” Theo smiles proudly as though six is a big accomplishment, and I ruffle his hair. “All right, you get a good sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow. Love you.”

“Love you too, Daddy.”

I get up off the bed and flick off his lamp, then quietly leave the room, closing the door behind me.

I head to my room to have a shower and my dick is hard the entire time I’m under the water, but I don’t allow myself to rub one out. I’m saving myself for Violet. Sure, I could go find her and take her right now, but we usually wait a bit until after Theo is in bed so we’re sure he’s asleep. Plus, I don’t want to seem like I’m smothering her and can’t get enough. Even though that’s the truth.

After I’ve dried off and changed into lounge pants and a T-shirt, I leave my room to head downstairs. When I pass her room, her door is open and I can’t help but notice a box sitting in the middle of her bed. I wouldn’t invade her privacy, but it’s a familiar-looking box, so I go in and pick it up off the bed.

Yep. It’s a hot-pink vibrator in the shape of a crookedL.

Shaking my head, I take the box downstairs. I find Violet in the family room, watching TV, and I stand in front of her, blocking the view of the TV.

“Hey… what’s going on?” She obviously knows something’s up.

“Found this on your bed.” I motion with the box, but I’m holding it so she can only see the back of the box, not what’s inside.

“What is it?”
