“I knew it was a good plan.” I kiss her.

It’s all I can do not to strip and join her in the bathtub for round two, but I need to have some self-control around this woman, so I force myself to leave, counting down the minutes until she’s done with her bath and joining me in my bedroom.

Twenty-five

Violet

It’s the day of Theo’s birthday party and I’m outside, putting the final touches on the decorations before we bring him out here to have a look. He’s in his room playing since he can’t see the backyard from his bedroom.

There’s a jumping castle for the kids and an activity table that, of course, has Lego on it. A rainbow of balloons greets guests at the side entrance of the house into the backyard, and every napkin, tablecloth, and plate has something Lego on it. Brady’s instructions were not to go too overboard—he didn’t want a lavish party like some celebrities throw their kids—but I think this is a happy medium and I really hope Theo will love it.

Brady ran out to pick up the cake I ordered—which looks like a bunch of different-colored Lego bricks stacked together—and when he returns, we’ll bring Theo out to have a look.

With my hands on my hips, I survey the table one last time, making sure everything we need is there.

Candles.

I’ll bring them out here now so we’re not searching for them when it’s time to do the cake.

I head inside and go in the pantry and flick on the light. I know I put the candles in here the day I went to get all the party supplies. After a minute of searching, I find them behind a box of cake mix. I grab them and spin around, yelping when I crash into a hard body. Brady steadies me with both hands on my upper arms.

“You scared me.”

“I see that.” He chuckles, and I swat him with my free hand but stop when he leans in to kiss me. “I took a peek out back. Everything looks fantastic. He’s gonna love it. Thank you.”

I smile. “It’s my pleasure. It was actually a lot of fun.”

Brady tucks a piece of hair behind my ear, then reaches back and closes the pantry door so we’re sealed inside—alone. I don’t have to ask what he’s up to because the pantry is our go-to make-out spot whenever Theo is up. We’ve basically turned the pantry into our own sex dungeon.

No sooner has Brady wrapped his arms around me and brought his mouth down to mine than we hear Theo calling from the other side.

“Daddy? Daddy, where are you?”

With a sigh and a chuckle, Brady backs away from me and opens the door. “Right here, buddy.”

Theo pops into view as I follow Brady out of the pantry. His forehead is wrinkled. “What are you guys doing in there?”

“Your dad was helping me find the candles for your cake.” I hold up the candles as though they’re evidence that we weren’t up to anything else.

Theo’s smile grows. “Can I see the backyard now?”

“Anything for you, birthday boy.” I walk past him and ruffle his hair. “Follow me.”

I lead Theo and Brady out to the back and no sooner is the door open than Theo races outside.

“This is awesome!” His eyes are as wide as I’ve ever seen them as he stands in place and circles around, taking it all in. “Wait until my friends get here!”

“I’m so happy you like it.” My heart feels as if it’s going to beat out of my chest when Theo wraps his arms around my legs, hugging me.

“I love it. Thank you.”

I run my hand through his hair. “You’re so welcome.”

I glance at Brady, and he has the strangest look on his face until he blinks and clears his throat.

“All right, should we go get you changed into your Lego shirt?” Brady asks.

Theo lets me go and runs into the house, leaving the two of us alone. Brady leans forward for a second as though maybe he’s going to kiss me, then seems to think better of it, reaching for my shoulder instead and squeezing it before retreating into the house.
