Even at this late hour, she’s still ready to keep going. A fiery woman through and through. And who am I to stop her?

I shrug off my jacket and drape it over the chair beside her. “Well, I’m definitely not going to leave you here by yourself. Especially if there’s fraud involved.”

Her gaze has changed from angry to curious. “You’re not going to force me to leave?”

“Why would I dose out the fire of a spirit ready to help me with this case?” I loosen my tie and unbutton the cuffs of my shirt. “Feel free to get comfortable. I like to work in strange positions, so get ready for them.”

“I don’t think it’ll be anything I can’t handle.” She winks at me.

My heart does a backflip, and I look her once over. The office seems less ominous in the night. A different kind of energy fills the air, whispering with possibility. No ghosts threatening to make an appearance. The office at night belongs to me and Kylie. My fingers are still alive with her touch, and I want more. No, stop it. How will it look if I start making a move after suggesting that we stay and work? The last thing I need is Jax banging down my door with accusations of being a perverted asshole.

“Okay then.” I laugh nervously. “I guess I better order us some fuel. No use decoding on an empty stomach.”

“Good thinking.” Kylie nods, turning back to the folders.

I turn to hide my growing desires, and I grab my phone with a sigh. I guess late night Chinese will have to be comfort enough.

CHAPTER16

Kylie

I leanon Johnathan’s shoulder as I crack open another folder. This is the fourth one in the last hour that I’ve gone through and still no connection to the missing properties. I glance up at Johnathan, his brow creased with concentration as he compares two documents side by side. The past few weeks have finally broken the awkward, sexual spell between us as we’ve poured over every document left behind by Frank Ronsberry together, and I’m grateful. For a second I thought I was doomed to fidget around Johnathan for the rest of my life. At least until I get another taste of him. But all of that is behind me now. With all of these late-night meetings I can barely keep my eyes open, never mind think of sex.

“Are there any eggrolls left?” I ask, sitting up from my slouched position.

“You ate the last one half an hour ago,” Johnathan responds without looking up.

“We’re going to have to figure out something else to eat soon,” I muse, snagging a bag of crunchy noodles. “A girl can’t only live off of lo mien.”

He peers over his papers with an amused expression. “Are we being picky about our midnight snacks?”

“All I’m saying is that for a city that never sleeps, I’m not seeing much of a variety around here.”

“Well, remind me to bust out the caviar next time.”

His smile is infectious. How can he still have so much energy after the past two weeks? If I was working with anyone else, I’d probably hate everything about this. But sitting next to him almost feels like I’m doing a research paper with a friend. Except that this friend is a really hot billionaire who also happens to be my boss. Yup, totally normal.

I rise to stretch with a yawn, and I can feel his eyes on me.

“Want to call it a night?” he asks. “I’ll have my men pull a car out front for you.”

“Sure.” I sigh, adjusting my shirt back into place. “I’ll go grab my things.”

He’s become used to the roll. I think. The way he gives orders these days seems surer than the man that hired me. The ghost of his father still lingers, no doubt. But the way he directs his men has the weight of authority of a true leader. I wouldn’t mind if he laid down the law on me once in a while. I can already see the scandal.

“Kylie?”

His voice snaps me out of my thoughts. “Hm?”

I turn to find Johnathan already by the door. “Ready to go?”

“Yeah, sorry.” I shrug on my jacket and hike my purse on my shoulder as I quickly cross the room.

He holds the door open for me with a smirk. “Don’t start burning out on me.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” I try to squeeze past him, but he holds his arm out in front of me.

I look up at him to see his face creased with concern. “I’m serious. If this become too much, just say the word and we’ll slow down.”
