Isabella smiles at me. “You’ll find out soon enough. But for now, I think you look a little tired. You should rest.”

The shock zaps me from the side, and I scream out in pain. My body goes limp as the two men hold me up, and I try to fight the darkness as Isabella walks away toward the elevator.

“Night-night.” She laughs as my eyes begin to grow heavy.

“No,” I mumble.

At least the jump drive is safe. My vision blurs as I’m consumed by the darkness and across the threshold.I’m sorry, Johnathan. I’ve failed. The rest is up to you. I can only hope it will be enough.

CHAPTER31

Johnathan

Come on,Kylie. Pick up.

I pace back and forth in my apartment, only to hear the sound of Kylie’s voicemail coming to life on the other end, again. Damn. This is the third time that I’ve called her and she’s yet to respond. I wanted to go over the plan one more time before I left for the meeting. Hopefully hearing more than her voicemail will calm my nerves. I type in the number for the office and tap my foot impatiently. Desperate times, desperate measures.

“Ronsberry Law Firm,” the receptionist says.

“Hi, Cindy. Can you to patch me through to Ms. Kylie? I can’t seem to get ahold of her.”

“Ms. Kylie hasn’t come in today.”

I start to break into a sweat. “What?”

“Is there something wrong, Mr. Ronsberry?” Cindy asks.

“No, I must’ve gotten the day wrong,” I mumble. “Thank you, Cindy.”

My mind races as I hang up the phone and sit on the edge of the bed. Something must have happened to her. There’s no way that Kylie would be late on a day like today. I made sure to leave her name out of anything related to this meeting down to the witnesses so Leo wouldn’t suspect her. Did Isabella find something? Would Leo stoop so low as to threaten me with Kylie if Isa told him to? None of this make any sense. I grip my phone tightly as I dial Jax’s number. Please pick up.

“Yo.”

“Where’s Kylie?” I practically yell. “Please tell me that she’s with you.”

There’s a rustle of papers in the background before he responds, voice strained. “Kylie went back to the office last night because she forgot…something. I figured she just pulled another all-nighter and stayed at the office.”

The pause in his voice sets off alarms in my brain. “What did you do?”

“What?” Jax laughs nervously. “Nothing. What do you mean?”

I can feel the anger rising. “I know you, Jax. You’re hiding something.”

“I’m not. Just…ask Kylie. She’ll vouch for me.”

His casual tone makes me explode. “Kylie isn’t answering my calls! The receptionist hasn’t seen her all day, so she’s not at the office either.”

“What?” Jax’s voice changes to panic. “Are you sure?”

Whatever Jax is hiding must have something to do with the case.

“Meet me at the office,” I say through gritted teeth. “I think it’s time we’ve properly caught up.”

“Johnathan, breathe.”

I’m seeing red as I pace around the room, ready to throw things after Jax finishes explaining everything. So much for Jax being a good friend.
