“You look well,” he says, looking sheepish.

“No thanks to you,” I spit.

“Kylie, I’m sorry for the way everything happened.” He’s trying to be stern, but he’s lying to me; I can see it in his eyes.

“No.” I stop him. “You’re not sorry at all. It’s been two weeks, and I’ve heard nothing from you.”

“Are you serious?” He balks. “I’ve literally been in meetings and interrogations since the last time I saw you. I can’t even go to the office; the press is all over the place.”

I glance at him again, trying to make sense of what he’s saying. I feel like I’m getting mixed messages. He’s trying to keep his distance, but it looks like he’s trying almost too hard.

“You still could’ve called.”

“I was trying to leave you out of all of this.”

“Too late for that, don’t you think?”

“Kylie,” he pleads. “I’m just trying to make sure that you’re safe. I can’t drag you in to any more of this mess.”

“I let you in!” I yell. “I told myself that after my ex-husband I was done with love. But you changed that. And I thought that after everything we’ve been through, I thought things would be different.”

“They are!” he yells back. “Leo and Isa are locked away, I’m a prisoner in my own apartment, and the feds are combing through every file of the firm.”

“You know that’s not what I mean!”

Rage flares up inside me, and I grab a book off a nearby shelf and hurl it at him.

“Kylie, stop!” he yells as I find more things to throw.

Who cares if I break something? He’s got money coming out of his ears. And here I am penniless.

He walks through my barrage and grips my wrists, staring me in the eye. “What do you want from me?”

I try my best to wiggle myself free. But he just moves closer and backs me up against the bookshelf. He presses my arms to my sides, and I can see it in his eyes: he loves me too. As his look changes from confusion to desire, he leans in and whispers in my ear, “What do you want from me, Kylie?”

I am weak in the knees. This can’t be all in my head; I know he can feel the intensity between us. I want him. Why doesn’t he want me too? I sob, unable to keep my emotions in check anymore. “I want you to be a good father.”

Johnathan bolts back, and the color drains from his face as he lets go. “What?”

I take in a shaky breath and find the courage to say it out loud.

“I’m pregnant.”

CHAPTER37

Johnathan

My body isnumb and my eyes are glued to Kylie’s tearstained face. The phrase echoes in my head over and over, but I can’t find any words to respond.

Pregnant.

My brain tries to reboot as my emotions rock from excited to terrified all at once. With the investigation still going on, this isn’t the best time to bring something so pure and innocent into the world. Especially after I’ve done my best to stay away from Kylie in the first place. With all the connections the Guerra Family has, I’m sure they want someone to pin the blame of their recent arrest on. And I’m the perfect target. Jax and David have tried to assure me it won’t happen with all of the evidence we’ve given them. But I still feel uneasy nonetheless.

Clearly I’m not going to be winning any father of the year awards.I think back to how I’ve handled myself. I swallow hard, trying to bring life back to my body. Kylie leans against the bookshelf, visibly exhausted. My arms numbly reach for a nearby chair and drag it closer.

“Here. Sit.”

“You look like you need it more than me.” She smirks a little.
