Anni clearly didn’t have the level of maturity needed to be a Mafia wife. This wasn’t just a game of pretend; this was serious and real life. She had jeopardized everything I’d worked for since the day I’d been initiated into the Fratellanza.

I’d let my guard down, just like I had with Rita, and this is what happened when I let someone in and let them get close to me—they hurt me.

I slammed my fist on my desk. I should have known better—I should never have started to believe in love again.

And when my contacts confirmed that Anni was the leak, then I knew there would only be one outcome for her: death.

CHAPTER 46

ANNUNCIATA

In the morning, Lorenzo was already gone when I got the kids up.

I was surprised that he hadn’t already hauled me off to his torture rooms or, at the very least, locked me in the bedroom.

“Did Lorenzo say where he was going?” I asked Adelina.

“He said he had to go see the Capo.”

That made sense.

Adelina looked at me with worry in her eyes. “Did Mr. Lorenzo say when Giuseppe would be released?”

“Giuseppe?”

“Yes, ma’am. The men are saying that Giuseppe was one of the men arrested in the raid last night.”

Shit. I rubbed my hands over my tired eyes. “No, he didn’t say. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.”

After breakfast, one of the soldiers came to the front door. “Ma’am,” he said, an icy look in his eyes. “I’ve been instructed to take the children to their grandmother’s house today.”

“To Cosima’s? By whom? That wasn’t the plan today.”

“By the boss.”

“Lorenzo?”

He nodded, looking like he wanted to end my life there and then. Did everyone think that I was the leak?

I got the children ready while the soldier stayed by the door. Luckily the kids were excited about the impromptu visit and didn’t sense that anything was amiss.

After the children left, I thought about what I needed to do today. Not being able to settle on anything, I decided I needed to get out of the house. It felt like everyone here thought that I was the leak, making the atmosphere around me oppressive. I would do something normal, like getting the groceries, and hopefully the small change in scenery would help me clear my mind. I grabbed my purse and went into the garage to get a car.

Driving up to the gate, I rolled down the window. “I need to go get some groceries. Could you assign a guard to go with me please?”

The soldier on gate duty fixed me with a steely stare. “The boss says you’re not to leave the property.”

“He said what?” I was open-mouthed with shock.

The soldier didn’t respond. I might not have been locked in the bedroom, but it was clear I was now a prisoner in my own home.

Turning the car around, I seethed while I returned to the garage.

Back in the house, I went to the kitchen and wrote out the list of groceries I had in my mind. I would have to send Adelina to the store. She was upstairs cleaning, but she could go later on.

As I made the list, I heard a notification beep from her cell. It had come from her purse.

I bit my lower lip in thought. I really needed to talk to Christian. I could ask Adelina to use her cell—but I didn’t want her to get in trouble with Lorenzo.
