I knew the only way I could do that was by looking up on the internet who worked at the clinic and seeing what else I could dig up on them via online credit checks and stuff like that. That was what they always did in the cop shows: look at who was in trouble financially and would therefore most benefit from going to the Feds.

The nosy nurse was the most likely suspect. Thinking back, her questions had been suspicious. She’d been flirting with Lorenzo right in front of me and asking him about his work. Surely she knew enough about the clinic’s clientele to know he was a bad man and that asking him about his work wasn’t a good idea?

I needed access to Adelina’s cell again so that I could access the internet and do some digging. I knew I could just ask Adelina to borrow her phone, but I really couldn’t bear for her to get into trouble with Lorenzo. He’d be furious with her if he discovered that she’d helped me, and she’d become such a good friend to me since I’d come here that I didn’t want to risk getting her fired.

Instead, I headed to the kitchen and hung out there for the afternoon, keeping an eye on Adelina and waiting for her to leave the kitchen for a few minutes so that I could sneak a look at her phone.

“Mr. Lorenzo will calm down, don’t you worry,” soothed Adelina, thinking that this would all blow over.

She obviously had more faith in him than I currently had. I didn’t think he’d calm down at all unless I could find out who the real leak was.

I hung around the kitchen all afternoon, no doubt getting under Adelina’s feet, but she didn’t complain once.

Adelina had decided to spend the afternoon making her homemade tomato spaghetti sauce. That required simmering fresh tomatoes and herbs on the lowest possible heat for at least three hours to let all their richness seep out. I really wished she’d chosen another day to do this.

The only times she left the kitchen was to use the bathroom, but that wasn’t enough time to do any real research on her phone apart from looking up a list of the clinic’s personnel. I found the nurse’s full name and committed it to memory.

By the time Lorenzo arrived home, I was no further in my research and knew I’d have to wait until tomorrow to use Adelina’s phone again.

LORENZO

When I got home that evening, I was greeted by the rich aroma of Adelina’s homemade tomato and garlic pasta sauce. I went into the kitchen and found Anni there with Adelina.

“Shall I serve dinner now, Mr. Lorenzo? Have you collected the children from their grandmother?”

“No, Adelina. They’re spending the next couple of days there.”

“But they haven’t got their clothes, toys, and other things,” Anni worried.

“My mother always keeps a supply of things for them at her house, so they’ll be fine,” I snapped. “I can send a soldier with anything else they need.” I wanted to keep my children away from Anni at the moment, even if it meant they might be a little unsettled.

“Bring my dinner to the study please, Adelina.”

Adelina nodded, knowing that it was wisest to make no further comment given the tension in the air.

I stalked to my study and slammed the door shut, collapsing into the chair behind my desk and closing my eyes.

My cell rang.

“Marco,” I answered.

“Come over this evening.” He didn’t even greet me, such was the seriousness of the matter. “I need an update on your investigation into who the leak was.”

“I’ll be there within the hour.”

As I hung up, Adelina brought in dinner.

After wolfing it down, I headed to Marco’s.

At Marco’s mansion, I stood in the study as I updated my Capo. “I’ve put feelers out with my contacts among the Feds. There are no leads yet, except for one of my guys confirming that someone in our organization leaked to the FBI.” Tiredness was numbing my body—I hadn’t slept since I’d found out last night about the raid.

“Fuck, that means that there’s definitely a leak.”

The Feds shutting down our main drug factory was costing us an obscene amount of money each day until we could get a new operation up and running. Marco had spent the day dealing with the lawyers while putting me in charge of investigating the leak and Aloysius in charge of sourcing a new location for our factory operations.

“The only new person to know about the factoryin monthswas Anni,” I gritted out. “She is the most obvious suspect.”
