Marco sat down and leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms behind his head. “It’s the best way to cement the alliance. I’m looking forward to meeting the young virgin they’ve decided to sacrifice to me.” He gave an evil smirk.

“You mean the girl they’ve decided to promise in marriage to you,” corrected Alessio.

“It’s the same thing, though, isn’t it?” he drawled. “She’s Società, and she’ll have to obey me once the engagement contract is signed.”

As close as I was to Marco, I still couldn’t help thinking that a man would have to be insane to agree to marry his daughter to my Capo. Marco was unpredictable, ruthless, brutal, and the complete opposite of what someone would look for in a future husband. I just hoped that the girl and her family knew what they were letting themselves in for.

Arriving home late that night, I handed Anni a new cell phone.

“What’s happened to my old one?” she asked.

“Alessio thought we should check it. When we took it apart, we found a tracking device in it.”

“A tracking device?” Her voice rose in confusion.

“Aloysius must have planted it in your phone. That’s how he found you at Cat-Con, and how he knew you’d gone to the drug factory that day.”

“But how did he…” Her voice trailed off, and she closed her eyes. “The day I left my purse in his car on the way back from the grocery store. My phone was in it. Do you think he planted it then?”

“Probably. And then when I had everyone searching for you the day you went to Cat-Con, he would have used the tracker to find your location, and that’s why he was the one to find you. At least the tracker came in useful in letting us get to you before the cops took you to the station.”

“He was so nice that time he found me at the strip mall, like he genuinely was concerned for my safety because I was out in public without protection.”

“He probably was concerned about you that day. It was probably only after you left your purse and phone in his car that he came up with the idea of the tracker and making you the scapegoat for a leak to the Feds.”

“Does Marco believe that Aloysius is most likely the leak?”

“Yes. Everything points to that, particularly after we found the tracker in your phone. We just need to get concrete proof now, and then we can confront him.”

CHAPTER 51

LORENZO

The next couple of weeks were tense.

I had to act as normally as possible around Aloysius but also watch him carefully for any clues he might give away confirming that he was the leak. At the same time, Anni had to lie low so that Aloysius still believed she was under house arrest. I’d told him, however, that the kids had come home as it was too unsettling for them to be away from me for too long.

The breakthrough came two weeks later. We’d been having him tailed twenty-four hours a day, plus planted listening bugs in his home, car, and phones.

He was a slippery bastard, that was for sure. But he finally slipped up when he dumped a burner phone in his trash. The team trailing him retrieved the phone, and we were able to recover the deleted call history to see that he had spoken several times to the FBI agent who’d been in charge of the raid at the factory.

Once we had the proof in place, Marco let me be the one to confront Aloysius.

“Hey, bro,” said Aloysius when I arrived at his apartment. “You didn’t say you were coming over today.” Normally we met at my house.

“I had something I needed to talk to you about.”

My tone made Aloysius stop what he was doing and look up at me. “And what’s that?” His tone was casual, but I could tell it was forced.

“We know that you are the leak—that you leaked the factory location to the Feds.”

Aloysius’s gaze hardened, and he didn’t say anything for a moment. “How did you find out?”

I was glad that he was according me enough respect to not even try to lie his way out of it, not that there was any way he’d be able to do that given the evidence we had gathered of his betrayal.

“The burner phone you used to call your FBI friend. You heard our father that day didn’t you, when he was telling me that he wasn’t my real dad?”
