He shot me a sharp look.

I decided to venture a guess. “I thought that perhaps you’ve met a girl?” Women seemed to fall over themselves for his laid-back charm, and he was always happy to take advantage of this.

After a moment, he drawled. “You know me, I’ve always got a few different girls on the go.” He wasn’t giving anything away.

“I thought that maybe there might be a special one, given that sometimes your mind is on something—or someone—else?”

He grinned at me. “Maybe there is someone. But it’s not at the stage yet of me introducing her to the family.”

“I was right. I knew it.” The girl must be Italian if she was suitable to be introduced to the family in the future, although she might not be from a connected family.

I knew that I wouldn’t get anything more out of Aloysius today, so I let the subject drop. Anyway, we had reached the mansion now.

The house was quiet when I let us in, and we went straight to my study. After dealing with the money, I went to find Anni to tell her that I would pick up the kids from my mother’s on my way home this evening.

Anni wasn’t anywhere downstairs. Not finding her upstairs either, but finding Adelina, I asked the housekeeper where my wife was.

“She said she was going out, Mr. Lorenzo.”

I knew that she hadn’t gone to the city center, as I’d vetoed that trip, but I didn’t know where she’d decided to go instead. “Where was she going?”

“I’m sorry, sir, but she didn’t say.”

“Never mind. I’ll check with the soldiers at the gate. They’ll know who drove her and is guarding her today.”

Aloysius was waiting for me in his car. He drove us back up the driveway and stopped at the gates. After speaking to the soldiers, we’d head to the club.

I found Giuseppe and another soldier on gate duty.

“Giuseppe.”

He nodded at me. “Boss.”

“Who’s guarding my wife today?”

“Er…who’s guarding Mrs. Marchiano?”

“Yes, that’s what I said.” It wasn’t like Giuseppe to be so obtuse. “Well?” I demanded when I received no answer.

“Boss, she said you were going to accompany her today…”

I was silent for a moment. “I was going to accompany her where?”

“To the city center. She said that you told her to meet you at the Blackbird Bakery, and from there you’d go together.”

My hands curled into two tight fists.

What the fuck was she playing at? She’d obviously lied.

“Which soldier drove her to the bakery?” I snarled.

Giuseppe looked like he wanted to be anywhere but in front of me right now. “She said that you gave permission for her to drive herself to meet you at the bakery—”

“For fuck’s sake!” I roared. “She’s a twenty-year-old girl and you let her go into the city without a guard?”

“I…I’m sorry, boss,” he stuttered.

“She can’t have gotten far,” drawled Aloysius, infuriatingly calm. Nothing ever seemed to ruffle him.
